Removing front door pillar speaker

Post by tiglon » Wed Jan 03, 2024 5:02 pm

I'm in need of a bit of help...

One of my speakers seems to have blown, so I've bought a replacement.

How the hell do you get the cover off so you can replace it? I've found one mention on another forum saying you just pull it, but I'm not having any success.

Do you need to pull it in a particular direction/angle? Is there something else that needs to be removed first?

It’s held on with two cross section plastic plugs moulded into the housing ..a straight pull out at 90 to the door horizontally should see it..it’s pinched a bit by the inner door skin but should come out with it in place…it’s one of those typical bmw push fit plastic parts that will on,y survive a few pulls before it’s us..

Hopefully the speaker connect cable is accessible when you remove it..

We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…

Dave (AnubisZed) has a YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCttNBt ... UQnoEvKB2Q where he shows how to replace most of the speakers in the car, including taking the door cards off, which may be necessary.

It shouldn't be necessary to remove the door card in order to remvove the mirror / speaker cover. it literally just pulls off. If I remember correctly I just grabbed it from the top pointed end and pulled away from the door and then once the top part is out it just lifts up and out.

Removing front door pillar speaker

You can wrestle it off, but before you do, you need to decide:

1: are you going to solder the existing wire to the new speaker.

2: are you going to replace the speaker by plugging the new one into the door speaker.

If 2, you need to take off the door card (which is unpleasant) and then take the speaker out and plug it in, then put the door card back on, which is unpleasant... then push fit the speaker housing back in.

If you do this, try to order some of the little plastic door card trim fixings as there will likely be a couple of casualties.

There are many videos about removing the door card, best to watch prior to the slog.

Ah. In my naivety I'd assumed that it would just need plugging in

It'll probably have to be option 2 due to lack of soldering iron - unless a lighter and a stainless steel dining implement will do the job?

Time to watch some videos...

You can imagine the disappointment I had when retrofitting two tweeters and putting everything back to find that only one of them works!

Both were new too... why shouldn't one work!

Test it before you put the door card back on! Haha

Good advice! I'm waiting for acceptable weather to coincide with a day off...

You will be waiting a while then, unless you drive it down to southern Spain! I have never seen so much water fall from the sky.
