2012 2L twin turbo -problem

Post by maryem » Sat Sep 09, 2023 3:02 pm

We've had the car 6 weeks and love it but now we have a problem. Oil leak coming from husband thinks just under the plastic cowling at top of the engine at the top of the rocker box, dripping onto the exhaust which is why we found it because it smells. Bought it from a local Vauxhall garage and it's under warranty. Husband doesn't fully trust the garage as so far they seem a bit off and dismissive.. Are there any similar common faults with this engine - and what do you experts in here think it could be? :(

Yes cracked cam box …it’s plastic ..they often fail…and/or the gasket under the cam box goes..as you say you know about it as oil drips on exhaust..not rocket science to replace but I’ve been let down badly by garages ..I guess you have no option but ask them to replace faulty part..

It’s about 2 hours labour and £300 ish for genuine BMW cover..
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…

It’s technically pretty trivial thing and shouldn’t ruin your ownership experience..there are a few plastic parts / oil seals that can let go..sadly you’ve been caught out ..get it fixed properly and enjoy the car there after

I was going to recommend a cork, and keep off the olive-variety! :)
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

Seriously, though, check the oil filler cap hasn't been damaged internally.

I had my local garage break one of the sealing 'wings' on the inside of the oil filler cap and it spewed oil out when hot. All over the exhaust, among other places. :(

He is booked in to the garage for the 29th, but that's a few weeks away. He asking if it would be ok to use the car until then? Would only be local short trips.

As long as you keep the oil above minimum no harm will come apart from smell and burnt oil lacquer on things..generally they don’t develop into a gush…be very careful if you / he tries to take the plastic cover on top off the cam cover…two bijou vacuum connectors if it’s an early one in there..very easy to break them..and easy to forget to reconnect after ..

That's great ta. He won't be poking about with it, just hopes the garage knows what they're doing. Vauxhall dealership, and the only mechanic we've seen looks about 12....
