Driving licence renewal

Post by dr_john » Thu Jun 22, 2023 9:39 pm

For old timers like me (over 70) it’s necessary to renew the DVLA driving licence every 3 years. :(

No problem, go on line to renew, the clever software even uploads your photo from your passport details if, you have a valid one. EXCEPT if you recently renewed your passport, then the system throws a wobbly and tells you it can’t recognise your identity. I spent the best part of this morning to arrive at this conclusion, affirmed by the DVLA in their online chat system.

So tomorrow I have to trek down to Tesco and use their Photo Booth and submit my application through good old snail mail.

Just when I thought that technology was actually making life easier.

End of rant :(

At least you understand snail mail. Imagine if you were 17 just passed your test and had to write with a pen, buy a stamp, seal an envelope and walk to a post box. :D

You can do the photo digitally with a code that the machine in Tesco will give you.

I read something the other day (no idea where, so I can't find it). You can take a picture on your phone against a suitable plain background and upload that, bypassing Tesco all together!

You should be able to do the whole thing at a major post office. They will take your picture with an iPad and do all the paperwork. Speeds things up as they can upload it direct to the DVLA website. I did this a few months ago as I don't have a passport. New licence only took a few days to arrive.

I wasn't going to mention it, but the lady at the post office asked if she could keep a copy of the picture, to frame and keep next to her bed!

It happens to me ALL the time.
Small price to pay for being gorgeous, I suppose! :D

I have to do the post office thing as well, not having applied for my UK passport. Must get around to doing that, first have to pass that English language and history test though ...

Failed the general UK knowledge sample test though - what date was the (former) queen's birhday and through which counties does Hadrian's wall go through
Current:

Previous:
Z4M Silver Grey - non flimper spec (gone to Bing)

Yep, that’s what I expected to find, an option to upload a jpeg or whatever. There isn’t one.
