Just read this whole thread and was going to put in my 2p worth when the revelation raised its head through Fishy Dave.
Even if the running in service was done on time or not you could never compare 2 cars after 30,000 miles as they will both have been driven differently. Any failures could never be blamed on a running in service being done at the right time.

Good work Dave the majority of people on here said a few hundred miles either way wouldn't worry them.

Like I said, it would be madness to let these mass produced cars leave with mineral oil or whatever.
Fishy Dave, could you contact BMW again just to confirm that Paul Rosche did build all S54's by hand in his conservatory? Finally when do BMW consider these cars will go into future classic mode as built in from the factory?

Going off topic, but reading this;
Is this because it's one of those engines with the chain at the gearbox end that fail when those stupid plastic guides break up?
Mike
WTF? It needs a new timing chain @ 90k??srhutch wrote: My DD, a 118D is going to need a new timing chain soon @ 90k, which is going to be £2k or there about. I've had it from new and driven with respect. Ok sort of know issue, but so are the thing we are talking about on here most of the time.

so basically this hole running in service is and has never really been an issue... more of a recommendation.... certainly not something to devalue a car over like many have been over the years!

I don't agree - if it is outside the tolerance miles wise, you have no chance of getting good will from the dealer / BMW.Beedub wrote:so basically this hole running in service is and has never really been an issue... more of a recommendation.... certainly not something to devalue a car over like many have been over the years!
Probably not so much an issue now at 10 years old though, but before it would have been.

I'm not sure that any of my running in services (2 engines, 3 diffs, 1 gearbox - including originals of course) will have much impact on the value of a 150,000 mile Z4MC

As the years go by then maybe less of an issue. But when they were nearly new then an issue for sure as it invalidated you warranty as the response confirms if not done by 1,700 miles.pvr wrote:I don't agree - if it is outside the tolerance miles wise, you have no chance of getting good will from the dealer / BMW.Beedub wrote:so basically this hole running in service is and has never really been an issue... more of a recommendation.... certainly not something to devalue a car over like many have been over the years!

Well this has certainly been an entertaining read! My Z4M has no record of it's first service and I kind of did fret about that a little...but now not so much. Having personally built a performance engine before and seeing it all first hand, honing cylinders by hand, etc... I can see how the RIS is a good idea, but in reality it's nothing more than a flush of some wear particles from the new bearings and also the Piston rings/cylinder bored. Maybe also the camshaft journals... Having done this before on my race car and checking the first oil change, the first new oil from the engine took an extremely long time to get black or go dirty.
