28i Exhaust

Post by SteveSmith » Tue Dec 20, 2016 9:50 pm

Hi all,

Couple of questions...

When you put the car in Sport mode does it open a flap in the exhaust?

Is there anything you can do to add a bit of notice without making it droney?

I'd love to leave it as it is in Comfort mode but then make it a bit louder in Sports mode!

28i Exhaust

Think the 28i exhaust has a flap blanking off one if the outlets, it opens on cold start or full throttle over 5k revs I think.
It can be set open constantly if you disconnect the actuator & wire the flap open

28i Exhaust

I looked a having a custom made one done a while back by an exhaust specialist near me... Around £1200 for a "tuned" one they reckoned they can get it to sound more or less how you like.. Once I realised the OEM one is stainless already I decided to leave as is. Little gain in upgrading for a bit of noise effect. I kind of like the stealth of the 28i package now to be honest. Put your money in a performance upgrade and you'll see around 300bhp instead
E89/28i Msport gone :( .. Zx10r track bike gone… time for a KTM 350 exc-f and some green laning and dirt bike excursions…. Let’s see how this goes… :

Oh I agree 100%. I wouldn't be spending anywhere near that!

For example, on the Mini Cooper S there was a simple mod to delete one of the rear silencers and it didn't make a huge difference to the noise on tick over or whilst cruising but made a nice difference when full throttle / down shifts etc.

I've always read things about a golf tee to hold a flap open on other BMW's so just wondered if there was something like that I could do!

As Rob has said, this valve is standard BMW fare, exactly the same part has been fitted on various models for many years (its on E36 3 series for example). As the 18/20i share the same exhaust as the 28i its a mod owners of all 4 pot E89's can do, in fact its on the turbo 3.0 cars as well. When it comes to 28i it seems that except for its bigger front brakes its mechanically identical to the 18/20i and the power output differences are all in the ecu. Again as Rob has said in a recent thread a number of tuners are now offering remaps for the 18/20 to near 300BHP, the same as they offer for a remapped 28i. Beginning to look like sometimes you can have your cake and eat it!
