Re: Retrofit Cruise Control
Just fitted cruise control to my car (Thanks Steve) what the hell were BMW thinking, fit everything apart from the switch ??
I got a second hand switch from ebay, cut out the cowl plugged in and away I went

Re: Retrofit Cruise Control
Clearly an easy way to differentiate between models and allows extra sales.
Actually it's a real advantage on BMW that they make provision for things to be added after the factory build.
Try a Jaguar for instance and not a single thing can be fitted and cannot be coded by dealer or aftermarket.

Re: Retrofit Cruise Control
Don't get me wrong, I'm very pleased it's so easy to retro fit, my point is, why not just fit the switch as standard, everything else is fitted after all ??

Re: Retrofit Cruise Control
So why not fit silver headlight inners, xenon headlights, matte grey grilles, 6 speed gearbox, etc, etc on all the models as fitted on the 3.0i because it costs them virtually no more.firebobby wrote:Don't get me wrong, I'm very pleased it's so easy to retro fit, my point is, why not just fit the switch as standard, everything else is fitted after all ??
Cruise control is just the same - it's an extra to differentiate by or ability to charge more at purchase.

Re: Retrofit Cruise Control
Many thanks for the excellent detail on the retrofitting of cruise control to my 04 reg Z4. This was undertaken after a chance meeting with a very kind and helpful Mr Irfan. I suppose BMW may have offered a better price for the component I read in a 2009 the price was around £60 ... yesterday I paid £114 at Sytner Nottingham, although im very happy with what I paid one would think that it was a rather large increase for a component which is obviously still sort after for the Roadster ... but I suppose BMW are making "hay" after the enthusiasts in this forum have significantly increased awareness for the Z4 community ... Once again many thanks to all who contributed to this topic and my acquaintance Irfan. Well on to my next project of remote door locking not unlocking when initiated from the key ...

This is just the stalk. Looking through the thread, the loom is needed on post October 2004 cars.
I can get any BMW part (work at a BMW dealership) but I won't give advice as to what parts might be needed

Retrofit Cruise Control
Ok all fitted and working , many thanks for this thread . A few wee tips that may help others .
Ive a m54 2005 z4 which connects to pin27 of the 40pin dme plug . I was dreading getting the wire from the cabin to the engine bay but that turned out to be the easiest bit . I was able to pass the wire through the very rear of the tunnel , i needed someone reaching from the passenger side to grab it . From the passenger side theres a large black rubber grommet just above where the carpet finishes . Punctured a tiny hold with a nail and pushed the wire through , with it being rubber it sealed back up again air tight . No need to remove the glovebox .
Next i was into the dme looking for a 40 pin black plug . I disconnected the plugs and took picts as my eyes couldn't see the tiny numbers . Soon worked out which plug i should be connecting the wire to .
Lastly and i hope this helps . I was stumped for while when it came to putting the wire into the plug . Finally worked out that the connection blocks inside the black plug unclip and slide out . This then allows you to slip in the wire into the correct position . Took a pict that will help
Ive no lights on the dash to say cruise control is ON but everything is working grand . Is this normal though ?
