Now had the ///M R for a year and changed the gearbox oil as soon as I bought it. There was a slight improvement to the notchiness and baulking but nothing to speak of.
I have recently been talking to Austrin Gearbox Specialists in Newcastle and on their recommendation decided to change to DSG oil with an additive. They have used this on quite a few BMW's where they have encountered gearbox problems and suggested I would feel a difference in a few hundred miles.
Unbelievable change in a few hundred yards!
I have now done about 100 miles and its a different car, notchiness from 1st to 2nd and from 3rd to 2nd has all but gone. It is lovely and smooth and a real pleasure to drive.
Photos of oil and additive attached.

Gearbox oil change
Interesting twist on things as many do suffer poor gear change especially cold .
Current ZM is fine all gears even from dead cold , previous was slightly baulky 1st - 2nd but not bad enough a problem to look for a solution
What was the additive they included ?

Gearbox oil change
I'm not sure the notchiness is due to the oil...as mine has the same (type of) oil and same gearbox from new.
The only time I had any notchiness was when I had my clutch & flywheel out, do I think it's a clutch alignment/adjustment issue.
As it probably involves a gearbox out job, I'm not going to bother trying to fit it..,as once it's into 2nd I have no further issue until I have to go into 1st again.

Oil is a big key in slick changes. I put Redline in mine after many years on Castrol - what a transformation!
