Z4M Steering Noise - which fluid to use?

Post by blueshoe5000 » Mon Jul 03, 2017 12:35 pm

Just wondering if anyone has had an issue with losing steering fluid in the Z4M's? i think it was common issue on the E46 M3 but no one on the forum seems to have had a problem with Z4M's.

Mine was making a strange noise when turning the wheel which was due to low fluid level ( inspection 1 @ garage confirmed this). It was topped up by the garage and has been fine for about a 2 months. Annoyingly the noise has come back so I suspect a have a slow leak which I will have to have fixed in the long term. :headbang:

So for the quick fix I'll need to top this up but have no idea where to top up from.

Has anyone done this or have a good guide you can point me to?
What fluid do i need to use? is it CHF 11S?

The power steering reservoir is under the intake plenum. It's a bit of a pain to get to - easiest would be to remove the intake elbow and tube. My 9yrs+ haven't had an issue with leaks. I replace the reservoir fluids every 2 to 3 years using the "turkey baster" method just because it's such a pain to get to. I had been using Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF on both the Z4MC and X5. On the X5, I do it annually with an oil change because the reservoir is just right next to the oil filter. Been using Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF on the X5 power steering for 10yrs+ without issue and had not noticed anything difference in the Z4MC either.

thanks for the replies, I'll have a quick look later this eve. I'm pretty sure I have a leak as there was some oily residue but I'll probably have to take the tray off for a more in depth look.

Maybe pipe
Maybe a seeping rack
As mine does under full lock
So I'm having a new one at some stage under warranty fitted
