Confused! Do Z4Ms have tyre pressure sensors or not?

Post by derin100 » Tue Apr 11, 2017 10:46 pm

As per the title.

I'm confused. At some stage in the not too distant future I'm having the 224s I bought off a forum member refurbished to replace the 19" "CSL style" replicas that came already on my Z4MR. These are brand new with new tyres but just not really to my taste.

There seems to be no issues with the TPS system with these. (not that I've actually driven the car!).

The recently acquired 224s don't seem have any tyre pressure sensors on them and so after a bit of reading on here I was convinced that E85s don't have them and the TPS runs off the ABS sensors. Hence all I'd need to do would be to swap over the wheels once they've been refurbished and I've bought new tyres for the 224s.

But then just now I read this ad for a Z4M and it mentions having had new TPS sensors.... :?

Can someone enlighten me please?

Throttle Position Sensors... nothing to do with tyres

They are the cause of many a fault code and not unusual to have been replaced. There's 2 in the engine bay area and one under the throttle pedal.

This.

It uses the ABS, although iirc USA cars do have sensors.

Looks like it's an ABS relative wheel diamiter/speed system on Euro/UK cars and went to valve stem monitors on facelift e85/6 for USA models only. USA systems discussed here on Pelican http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticle ... toring.htm

No. As others have said, the Z4M uses the ABS sensors to monitor wheel rotation. When it senses a different speed side to side, over a period, it assumes the tyre has deflated and pops the lamp on, or at least it should. I also don't think it works so well.

Meanwhile
Over in the New World ...
Canadian Zeds have no in tyre wheel sensors.
They use the ABS System as buzyg stated.

Apparently American Zees do have a pressure sensor in each tyre.
I have sensors in my snow tyres which I purchased via Tire Rack in the USA.
You can tell you have sensors if the tyre valves are metal.
When Tire Rack discovered that they had sold me $200 worth of unnecessary sensors,
they refunded my charge account !

Cheers
