Z4M - where to go next?

Post by samZ4M » Fri Jul 21, 2017 9:26 pm

New to the topic, and I keep asking the question myself. I've had my current Z4M for over 2 years now and when ever I think what I could change to, I just see ££££ in my eyes. I'm certainly happy with my car, and it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it (I don't commute in a car). When ever I look, to move marque to say AM, it's a good £20k to do so. I just can't imagine it's going to be that much better. I do keep looking at F types, but again, it's a big lump of cash.

I decided some time ago that the car is a keeper, as I go through life it'll take a back seat to 6 months tax and just be a summer jolly car. Whilst my main car (and track day car) increase in appeal. I see my self getting some form of estate for daily duties and ferrying people about, whilst the clio 182 remains the track car. Once I purchase the 'practical car' (as in 335 estate...) both the current cars will become fixed in their station. I honestly can't think of a better way to do it. Over time, I hope to replace the daily and track day with better models, but the Z still seems firmly in the fleet.

I love the mechanical-ness of the car. Drove past a dealer and saw an M2, which is about all I can think to replace it with, and decided instantly that it'd be too electronic-al and not as raw. I really do think the Z4M is the last of the proper drivers cars, with limited traction controls and proper driving experience. I'm also not sure I'd even want to mod it, but I'm sure I will over time. As time goes on, I build up memories with cars too, this ones suffered a big eurotrip this year, and I can only see more of them. Mileage isn't important to me. If it goes bang, lets try a V8 under that bonnet!

Agree with everything here. This thread indicates the M is pretty much a bargain as you can't replace it unless adding loads of money

Z4M - where to go next?

Post by flimper » Fri Jul 21, 2017 10:41 pm

None of the new cars interest me in the slightest. The only things that interest me are:

1. BMW E60 M5 - but too big and too expensive to fix
2. Audi RS4 B7 - For the V8 itch
3. BMW Z3M Coupe - Too expensive
4. Porsche 997 911 - Too common

Looks like I'm keeping the Z4 :)

You could keep your Z4MC and have an interesting daily driver as long side it. I commuted in an S2000 for a year and sold it for more than I paid for it. I now have an RS4 Avant and a huge fuel bill

Z4MC - heavily fettled for track use
Lotus Exige - sensible daily driver on the mods slippery slope
Westfield SEiW - in hibernation
Modified RS4 Avant - back in Blighty
S2000 GT - gone

Totally agree best thing i did was adding a hot hatch to the fleet which is now tuned up nicely, it absolutely rocks for the DD, on a back road eats up most things that dare to play and i genuinely LOVE it... i paid less than 15k for it a few years ago spent alittle on second hand tuning bits and it was one of the best handling cars I've owned when i got it, it now has the fire power to match with literally every toy imaginable inside, the FST is probably one of the best cars I've owned, on top of all the above does 38mpg all day long....

I'd love a Fiesta ST, but ideally want a bit more room - and the Mrs doesn't like the Focus :( I wanna chuck some bikes in the back and carry 3 people at the same time.

The Z4M replacement game is just a question of identifying exactly what it is you want from your next car. There's so many options now to suit every tiny niche... Unless you just want a better/newer Z4M - and then there's a few pretty specific cars that fit the bill (front engine, small, brusier 'grab it by the scruff', screaming engine, raw sportscar not sporty-car), with varying price tags.

I think they to realise is - for the same money .. there are not really any options. For 2x the price you get a decent upgrade/alternative, 3-4x you get a cayman GT4 perhaps, then above that it's supercar/rare car territory.

My parameters are:
1] Max price £25,000
2] No slower than the Z4M
3] No older than 2007
4] Max miles 40,000

All I can find are the Audi RS4 (is it any faster?), BMW M5 (running costs scary), Jaguar XKR (old man image) and BMW M3. All of these I reckon would cost at least £7,000 to get into. Am I missing any interesting cars? Not sure I want to spend that sort of money to get out of an already brilliant car :?

I'm really toying with the idea of a Focus RS... but I'm realy not that keen on the eco-boost mustang engine they are using for it, as I'm getting older I'm still searching for the thrills but the package does need to be able to everything in terms of a DD, my DDs get a REAL hard time and are often on the track then the next day parked in my office car park. Im also into biking and I'm finding the Fiesta isn't the best for the boot mount storage options and it doesnt have roof rails :x :x More and more family related trips with kids are now happening too :o

The z4 will always stay so i don't really add it into the equation, they are worth so little now days that its not even worth my time entertaining swapping it, However if i was ever offered top wak for it i would sell and try something new, one thing I've learned in recent years is being able to let things go and try new, attachment to such material things isn't a good idea.

Can't think of anything under £40k, but I would consider a manual (981) Cayman GTS to be a decent trade-up at current values. £50k and rising, but an incredible car at that price and one that lots of people are choosing over s/h 991 Carreras or higher-end 997.2s. Possibly an all-time great.

I'd also consider an E9x M3 and a £10k budget for suspension plus weight reduction mods. You could create something very special along the lines of the CRT. Not necessarily an upgrade to the ///M - just something different that would be a fun thing to move on to.

Start thinking F types guys. Of course I'm biased and it's a chunk of money, but get into an S and you'll soon realise it's a big step up from the Zed in combined package of performance, noise, enjoyment, style: looks, quality and bystander admiration
It's bigger, more grown up, but get it on the open road and you would never swap out.
£38k will see bottom of ladder S which you need for 380hp and lsd but an easy upgrade to 450+

F type is a great option but i still feel its abit too civilised, the z4m has that RAW factor, for ME, the only car that i would swap it for currently is the Boxster Spyder or GT4, but its just to much to spend to move up, so so much.

The car i got as a replacement i was concerned wouldn't have that raw feel you refer to (as that's specifically what i'm looking for in a car - and i've heard the GT4 doesn't have the rawness as it's too polished) - i have now tested the car i'm buying, needless to say it does have that rawness in buckets, in fact i'd say its more raw than the zed, and thus i've put a deposit down :p

Lots of Z4 M owners don't necessarily want that rawness though - the Z4 also offers relative comfort when not driven above 4k. Depends on how you use it, and why you use it - for me, i was only really interested in the experience between 4-8kpm :D
