No. 240 RHD Roadster complete rebuild

Post by tomscott » Thu Oct 19, 2017 4:30 pm

Is there any context to this? Is it sitting at red line all day every day?

Agree, doesn’t sound like it’s primarily a track car so road use only isn’t going to destroy a standard s54 engine in a few thousand miles?

Unless he's doing it from cold without warming the fluids through properly first.

My ///M has seen an awful lot of track miles and enthusiastic road use without being destroyed... I'm sure there must be more to this than it simply being driven hard.

Z4MC - heavily fettled for track use
Lotus Exige - sensible daily driver on the mods slippery slope
Westfield SEiW - in hibernation
Modified RS4 Avant - back in Blighty
S2000 GT - gone

My luck with cars is appalling.

Alternator packed up on my A class a couple of days ago, then broke my 83 B2 Passat on it’s first outing in 6 months. I didn’t even drive them hard :( . Reckon I’ll need a chauffeur when my 84 B9 is complete. Can’t get the Alpina engine components

Seriously thinking mate. There is obviously an issue for bottomends now to be forged. Wouldn’t do it otherwise

I give up with the S54. Was considering a C63 and be done with it

problem is, you didn't have a good one to start with....... so your reference point is all skewed.... fair play for trying but i always though you went about the whole thing backwards tbh, let me tell you a solid, well maintained s54 will take a hole lot of punishment , and then some......

This. The fact that it was crashed by the previous owner would tend to suggest it may have been abused before it even got to the OP. Then ragging it on the edge from cold every time it’s driven has finished the job. There’s a lot to be said for having some mechanical sympathy and treating the car with the care it requires before driving it hard.
Current... Silver Grey ///M Roadster, non-flimper spec, Imola Red nappa, permanent ear-to-ear grin 8)

Previous... 3.0Si Sport Roadster, Black Sapphire, Dream Red leather with lots of toys and lots of mods...

To be fair By, your right. The car was never going to be right. It was doomed from the offset.... but and a very big but that I don’t regret. At the time when I purchased the car, I wasn’t in a position to go out and buy a straight one. So armed with a dream I set about LD39240 rebuild.
Now having studied my arse off to better my career, I’m in a position to let go of the car.

Regardless of cost, the up and downs......... i done it and it was epic. It’s killing me removing parts.
