Parking Advice

Post by dans6490 » Thu Aug 03, 2017 7:33 pm

Similar subjects have been discussed on here but I'd be interested in people's views on the following.

We have 4 x cars and we can get them all on our drive. Most of the drive is not drop-kerbed, only the original drive width of one cars width (to the left of picture one).

Anyway, next door have a daily visitor who parks in front of my z4, so I can't get it out. I get on ok with neighbours, never had words, take each other's parcels etc. I mentioned the parking to my neighbour once and how people seem to have no sense when it comes to parking on our street but not a direct conversation about his annoying 'visitor'.

Now my wife says as the kerb is not dropped where they park, they are entitled to park there. I tend to agree but surely blocking in someone's car is ignorant at best?

Just wondered if it's just me or others would also get tired of this. The other issue is that their drive is also as big as ours but there one car (long wheel base be van) is parked in such a way that another car won't fit.

Photos below, including their drive with no-one parked outside.

definitely have a civil word with your neighbours, the guy blocking you in is a prat. Can't understand why he would if there's enough space on their drive!

Looks like the visitor is being an arse. He could easily park in front of their house.

Guess as there is no dropped kerb though technically he is doing nothing wrong.

Can you not pay for the council to drop the curb for the full width of your drive? Then they wouldn't be able to block it.

They are being an arse but legally entitled to park there.

I'd just have a quiet word and ask them why they don't park outside the neighbors

Sometimes people are just arses and there is no talking to them and no reasoning with them.
My newish neighbour across the road parks directly opposite my driveway on a narrow street and even after asking politely if he could park 4 or 5 feet in either direction to give us a bit of room to get in and out his answer was "I will see what I can do" and has ever since parked exactly in the same place.
Funnily enough the old neighbours daughter used to park in exactly the same place deliberately any time she visited even after being asked if she could park slightly differently.
It would be different if there was nowhere else to park but there is plenty of room.
I now just put it down to the car and possible jealousy so they try and piss you off.
If it is classed as a driveway they are parked illegally as you are not supposed to block a driveway if there is a car in it.

You could have a quiet word but I expect they know exactly what they're doing!

I would get the rest of the kerb dropped as suggested above if your budget permits and in the mean time maybe park one of your vehicles outside their house where there isn't a dropped kerb

Ignorant but perfectly legitimate.

I would just get the kerb dropped.

Would it be worth parking one of your own cars there, then at least it's easier to move

Appreciate that parking at a dropped kerb is illegal, but surely so is parking on the path itself !!! If not, whats the point in the path? Why not just park a car completely on the path !!!

If the council is anything like ours, they won't allow more than one 'standard width' drop kerb per property - their excuse being that they need to allow space for on-street parking

That's what I'd do - move one car (the largest) into that position before the daily visitor turns up. After a few days, you could move it back onto your drive after the visitor has arrived - if they then come out and move their car in front of your house, you can have a few words with them....

Alternatively, you could always 'liberate' a couple of traffic cones from some roadworks and leave them strategically placed in front of your house...

Even though the kerb is not dropped, anybody can obviously see that they are blocking your car from exiting your own drive. What an utter t@t, pardon my French!!!

May be I'm wrong but I think you will find that blocking your egress off the drive is or was when I was working causing an obstruction :D
