Help me out here please?
I buying a private registration plate via the DVLA next week.
My question is, once i have bought it, what happens to the old / current one on my car? Does ownership go default back to the DVLA?
What are my responsibilities? Am i just re registering the car under this new plate, and handing ownership of the old one back? The old ones gone right, and if at a later date want to transfer this new plate on to another car, do i just buy any old random registration (with in restrictions) to put back on the original car, right?
FYI: I dont particularly want or care for the current one on it now.

Once you get the certificate then you can "link" it to your car via the DVLA website and they will send you a new logbook with the new registration number, you will have to notify your insurance.
As for the old one (If it is a standard registration) it will still be with the DVLA and can be returned to your car,say if you want to sell it without the private plate. If it is a private plate then you can either sell it (on ebay) or keep it until the expiry of the certificate or assign it to another car.
Now, I believe when buying you got 2 options:
1- you can either choose a certificate that belongs to you and you can assign to any car you want.
2 - you can buy a certificate that only goes with the one car, and for the same cost it is no brainer which one you will choose (1 Obviously).

.
If the 'old' plate was allocated by the DVLA it's reserved to be put back on when you remove your private plate.
If however the car has another private plate on now, it's lost forever when you transfer your new on onto it - so, if you wanted to keep that one, you have to put THAT on retention first (the car will get its original allocation back) THEN assign your new private plate.

Top tip: Keep your physical original plates so you can put them back on the car if you sell it and retain your private plate.

Only if you're buying a new car...
Having Just bought a plate from DVLA the old one you would have to pay to put it on retention if you like it. However, I like you don't care for the one it had so it goes back to them unused. It's common to be reassigned the same plate if you remove yours again but it's not guaranteed.

Ive swapped plates around on a few cars over the years and always got the original one back from the Dvla when moving the car on. They say its not guaranteed but I've never spoken to anyone that has been allocated a different plate.
(Of course now I've said that, someone will be along who was given a different number plate)

Same here. Maybe 10 car plate swaps, always ended up with the original.LordOxygen wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2017 8:43 am Ive swapped plates around on a few cars over the years and always got the original one back from the Dvla when moving the car on.
