E89 mirror caps

Post by Highlander » Sun Apr 24, 2016 11:02 am

Morning all,
Finally getting a proper detail/paint correction & seal organised for my car but need a little help/advice regarding the door mirror caps.
I'm going to have the 2 roof sections wrapped in black and also want the mirror caps black to complete the look.
Now,the only caps I can find on Ebay(default source of info/products for me) are covers that fit over the existing ones so I'm not sure what this'll turn out like.Does anybody have feedback on these having tried them?
I'll also try the local dealer in the off chance that these come un-painted and black as a spare part.
I suppose the only other option is to remove the originals and either have them painted orpaint them myself......am I right in saying that the mirror glass un-clips from behind after tilting it for access and then the mirror cap is un-clipped( hopefully without breaking anything)
Thanks for all help & advice

Hi Highlander
I had the same predicament as you and could only find the covers on e bay for E89. It depends if you want to wrap your mirrors in black or maybe carbon fibre?
The person I use for signage told me that to wrap a mirror in carbon fibre wrap is extremely difficult and would not recommend it. What I did was actually buy a set of original mirror covers off e bay which were white and got them carbon dipped. Total cost was £85 for the dipping and £40 for the covers. The benefit of this is you now have the originals which you can return to the car when the time comes to sell.
As for the removal of them I have to admit I chickened out and gave my mechanic £10 cash to replace them as its a fiddly job! If your going to do it then buy a plastic leverage tool.
Good luck and show us your pics when all done!

Thanks for that, think I'll ask the local paint sprayer I use for a quote for roof and mirror caps just to see how that compares with having the roof wrapped and sourcing the mirrors myself. That way it'll all be the same colour,or near enough, and less hassle for me.
Detailer said he'd remove the mirror caps also so maybe that's an option for painting them myself

Was it an easy job Kermit?.....I thought the caps were a bit of awkward to remove and a likelihood of breaking the retaining tabs.
From the research I did it seems like the glass is removed 1st,some type of spring clip affair and then you get access to the tabs that remove the mirror cap.
The guy that quoted me to cover the roof sections said he probably couldn't cover the mirror caps in 1 piece and a join would look pants so not going down that route.
Can you post up a few details regarding removing the caps and I'll have a go?
Do I need any specialised tools to release the retaining tabs without breaking them?
Thanks

Sorry for been late for the party,

I did wrap mine originally - but had to remove them as they got damaged after jet washing - ended up with purchasing some carbon fibre caps.

However I did get my hoops painted black though
