Weaving at Motorway Speeds

Post by TPR » Wed May 03, 2017 7:23 pm

Hi everyone,

Looking for some help. When driving at motorway speed a feel like the car is lurching or weaving from side to side. No traction control lights or anything just feels pretty scary.

I've recently had some new tyres fitted following another cracked wheel. I decided that I'd up the profiles of my rear tyres to 35 (from 30) in attempt to save myself any further wheel issues.
The rears are now (not RF) Landsail LS588 (I heard good things so didn't got back to the Bridgestone Potenza.)
Fronts are still 30 profile (non RF) Bridgestone Potenza.

So what do you think the issue is here;
Lower profile on front vs back?
Not fitted correctly maybe balancing or tracking?
Poor tyre choice by me?

Really appriceate any help before I get the wallet out agian.

Why in the world would you stick such cheap rubber on your performance car? It's the only thing connecting you to the road. Rubbish tyres can make massive difference.

I thought this may be the answer, stupidity on my behalf tbh.

I will be changing back to the Bridgestones asap if that's the case. Before I do, are there any other issues with having different profiles front and back etc.
Or can I put 35 profiles on the back but a better tyre?

You don't say which car / alloys but assuming 296s or 326s in 19inch ?
Definitely drop the runflats & the Landsail as alone they are both cack so together they must be utter bilge
If the alloys are the factory 8j 9j set up i would go 225 35 front / 255 35 rear & if you have one eye on your wallet but still want a good all round performer then consider Uniroyal Rainsport 3 s which should be around £400 a set

Then if the car is still feeling twitchy get a alignment / geometry check done

Thanks for replies all. Sorry for missing out some information..
Car is E89 28i with 296 19s - factory set up. (No pictures to share on this P.C)
I don't currently have any run flats on and when I had the 30 Profile Bridgestone Non-RFs all round the car felt great.

It's clear I need to get these new Landsails off, my next question is can I do that and leave to 30s on the front?

I've not had the Geometry done since I bought the car in September, but nothing felt off until now..

It had 30s all round and I upped the rears to 35 recently following a cracked wheel.
So it still has the 30s on the front. Can I leave them as is for now, swapping the rears for better tyres. Or do I just need to bite the bullet and change all 4 at the same time?

Cheers

I personally wouldn't bother with putting anything other than some good premium rubber on. Uniroyal RS3 may be better than the Landsail tyres you currently have but they are still a budget choice and not really fit for a sports car in my opinion.

You might be able to get the new Michelin Pilot Sport 4S if you size up on both axles. If not then the Michelin Pilot Super Sport are a very close second.

Look at the door plaque to find the correct tyre sizes for your car. You can get away with anything up to 5% change to rolling radius between the front and rear axle but above that you will end up confusing the cars stability control.

Thanks for the detail, it's the first and last time I'll make this mistake don't worry. I've just ordered a set of Goodyear Eagle F1s (As3). From reading on here they seem to be performing well for people.

I've heard good things about them too. Might not be as grippy as the Michelins but reviews say they are a quieter tyre.
