35is Running temperatures

Post by RayM » Sun Mar 12, 2017 11:05 am

Hi guys

Just wanted to ask where your temperature gauge sits on your 35is models?

Mine seems to take ages to warm up, at least by what the gauge is saying. It never gets to the 120c middle of the gauge but sits around 90-100.

What do you guys see?

Cheers

Yup it will take quite a while to warm up.. at least 5+ miles. I find normal running temp is 90c.

If you're really curious to know the 'real' operating temperatures of various engine components, investing in Carly Pro and using the 'live parameters' feature is very useful. Helped me diagnose a cooling issue when I first bought my E85.
It logs everything too for post-drive analysis.

It's the same with the 135i, same engine. It's nice to have a visible oil temperature gauge opposed to just the general water temperature found in most cars. It's a nice visual reminder to promote restraint before everything is nicely warmed up.

The temp can rise to 110 when really pushing on, but will quickly drop back to 90 when on a cool down run.

Mine takes around 10 minutes until it's off the 70C mark but then quickly moves up and sits around 110C if I'm in heavy traffic or pushing on maybe closer to 120C. Apparently that's normal for the N54T.

Thanks guys that's all good then. I was a little concerned as almost every other car I've had over the last 20 years normally sit with the needle in the middle of the gauge, so all your comments put my mind at rest

Yep, the oil takes a lot longer to warm up than the coolant-my n20 engine is the same

Is there an oil cooler on the 35is and if so, is it just open circuit or does it have a thermostat ?
just curious !

I haven't had a chance to try my 35is yet but my previous 3.0l oil temp used to be very stable even in hot weather but would climb very quickly when put under any stress i.e. Mountain pass in summer (Splügen) it would drop equally as quickly when the throttle was relaxed.
I'm still unsure if the oil is cooled and if it is cooled, is it thermostat controlled?

Oil temp is directly related to block temp which is thermostatically controlled with coolant. In the 35i/iS there is an additional oil cooler in the front side bumper intake.

I thought there was but is that thermostatically controlled?

If you think the engine oil takes a while to warmup then take a look at the DCT transmission fluid temp. Takes a good 40min to warmup for me!
