Cracking Alloys

Post by Turbodog » Tue Nov 29, 2016 10:26 am

Hi all
Driving home last night hit a fairly big pothole front passenger side wheel at 55-60 mph . Made an unpleasant bump :o
Looking at the wheel it looks fine, no visible damage, and driving into work this morning all feels fine and dandy. However I'm aware from other posts how easy it is to crack the 326's and it sounds as though it's not always easy to spot the crack. Should I be worried?

I'd be getting them checked asap. 326's prone to cracking especially on RFT's.

Ok thanks. I assume if I take it to my BMW dealer and fess up about the pothole it would reduce my chance of a replacement under warranty if it is cracked....?

If you're unlucky this may be the case, however, I did have a crack spotted on my first ever MOT on a rear 326. It was a tiny 1cm split only visible in the inner face directly adjacent to the tyre. The degree of 'radial distortion' was checked and it was within their acceptable range so the wheel was replaced under warranty.

Good luck

Cheers JC :D

You have had a better experience than me , they are happy to point out the 1 cm cracks , unhappy to replace them under warranty

If its cracked badly usually your tyre will loose pressure and will be like a slow puncture so if its not id say its fine as you have already been driving on it. Just take the wheel off and check it how long would that tke 15 mins

Welcome to my world. Last time my nearside rear cracked I discovered I had been driving around on a deflated and now damaged rfl tyre. The crack has now been repaired and I have got rid of runflats on the rear. No further problems I now spend my time avoiding Manchesters pot holes. 19 inch Bmw - Ronal wheels are made of chocolate but Bmw will not accept responsabilty for potentionally dangerous alloys for Uk Bmw owners.

Found out one of mine was cracked after the tyre pressure light came on a couple of times, local tyre place identified the crack, found a local metal fabrication company that welds up a lot of wheels, £30.
