MOT Fail cracked wheel.. New one's on the way

Post by philip27 » Mon Aug 01, 2016 3:52 pm

Well the expense of owning my e89 keeps adding up. It failed its MOT today with a cracked rear wheel

Not that much of a surprise really I knew the wheels were fragile at best on the car just annoying as it appears to have happened in the last few weeks no sign of a crack whilst it was serviced and had the shocks sorted oh well....

On the plus side it means I am getting new wheels and will be run flat free

I have gone for these they may divide opinion a bit. I rembered seeing a red E85 with gunmetal wheels and thought the colour combination worked really well so that inspired my choice.Image

Hoping for some hasle free motoring after the last couple of months.
Went to the dark side Porsche Cayman 987s

I'd love to know what the highest mileage someone attained with 19s and run flat tyres and NO cracks?
Anyone managed more than 50k? :)

Just going with the same ofset that was on i was pretty happy with how the 296 wheels filled the arches.

Just dont see the point of replacing them with the same to break again and as mine had been refurbished id of had to factor that in to get them all to match.

Not that bigger surprise that one had cracked especially given the state of the roads round here. It means I get rid of the runflats so taking that as a big positive. Just hope they look ok on the car I think the E89 is a hard car to pick wheels for.

My 296 19 inch had done 57000 when my nearside wheel starting loosing air due to a small fracture on the inside. It has been welded and I've gone to 40 and 35 profile tyres and I am trying to avoid Manchester's pot holes, not easy.

52k before two cracked rears. No sign just two weeks before. Warranty sorted it.
Why is it that people who can't take advice always insist on giving it?

Less than 3000 miles (in my ownership) before one of my rear 326 alloys cracked :(.

I went for CSL reps and non run flat tyres but soon ended up buying a replacement 326 alloy.

I feel your pain for finding aftermarket alloys which will suit the E89. Not an easy task. If I was to switch (again) I like these.. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/112145719704.

I should post a thread one day with the purpose of collating a list of all E89 forum members affected by either 296 or 326 alloy cracks.

Less than 800miles in my ownership before rear n/s wheel (326) discovered cracked during service, just over 20k from new and 3 months out of warranty-wheel passed runout test with dealer with less than 0.5mm deflection and still brushed away for goodwill replacement :x

This could be a valuable piece of research.

However, it needs a second question: the highest mileage attained with 19s and non run flat tyres and NO cracks?

I got 22k in 6 years on 326 rims with Bridgestone run-flats - on the day I was taking it to the garage to trade in, I got the 'Boing' and a warning symbol - I did the only decent thing - reset and used the run-flat facility - I will never know if it was a puncture or a crack!
You don't stop playing when you get old - You get old when you stop playing!
So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.
