Now Found (Pics included): E85 <£4500
As I sold my 3.0Si to release funds, I'm looking for a cheaper alternative. I've got myself a Cooper S and while it serves it's purpose, not having a car that I take pride in and actually enjoy leaves a slightly empty feeling!
Therefore, I'm after a Z4 E85 for less than £4500 and will consider the following as essential:
Engine: 2.0, 2.5 or 3.0 w/ <70k miles
Interior extras: leather seats, MFSW
Exterior colour: Red, Black, Dark blue (one of the two variations), Titan silver (not Sterling)
Non-essentials but preferred:
Facelift
Montego blue or bright red exterior
17" or 18" alloys
<60k miles
Cup holders
Wind deflector
Cruise control
Red leather seats
Thanks for looking.
Dave

Unless you plan to add crazy miles why be so hung up on miles not to belittle the 4 pots but isn't a decent 70k - 80k 6 cyl a better prospect than a sub 60k 2.0 ?

If it's 70kish and has had the bushes changed and roof motor replaced I wouldn't be as sceptical, I guess it depends on how much care the previous owner put in to it. Are the 2.0 particularly more fragile? My 3.0si was definitely more reliable than my 2.5si but I've no experience with the 2.0.mr wilks wrote:Unless you plan to add crazy miles why be so hung up on miles not to belittle the 4 pots but isn't a decent 70k - 80k 6 cyl a better prospect than a sub 60k 2.0 ?

Id stick with the straight 6 engines, the 4 pot engines are not as reliable and won't feel as special IMO. The difference between a 3.0si and a 2.0i is pretty big also you get less kit as standard on the 2.0i models too.
Id be looking for a pre-facelift 3.0i for the cash and you should be able to pick up a nice one for £4500 too.

Narrowed down to either a 2.2 manual or a 3.0. I'd like to remain in the straight 6 family.

I'd steer clear of the 2.2 unless you find exactly what you want in spec and colourdpereira wrote:Narrowed down to either a 2.2 manual or a 3.0. I'd like to remain in the straight 6 family.
Was not a well loved engine and short lived in the Z4. Has much less power then the 2.5 or 3.0

Reliability-wise is there any notable issues the others wouldn't be equally at risk from? I was planning on viewing one tomorrow.cj10jeeper wrote:I'd steer clear of the 2.2 unless you find exactly what you want in spec and colourdpereira wrote:Narrowed down to either a 2.2 manual or a 3.0. I've been put off of the 2.5 due to my experience with my previous 2.5si, leak and oil consumption issues~ likely to have been a bit of a lemon? As I've read several similar oil consumption queries regarding other 2.5's too.
My 3.0si was great which is why I'm simply hoping I get lucky and find a pre-facelift 3.0 with reasonable miles around my budget before summer sets in.

In general the M54 is a more bomb proof engine. Less power than the later, but more reliable,
As they all get older it's all about condition so I'd go for the larger 3.0 hat will hold value, less stressed, better equipped and sells better than the smaller engined variants

I had just thought about how a smaller engine has more likely been stressed by pedal down driving than the 3.0. It seems I'll have to exercise patience in order to specifically hold out for a presentable manual 3.0 within my budget. I should have pulled the trigger on one that a trader has just snapped up and put back up for over 1k extra!cj10jeeper wrote:In general the M54 is a more bomb proof engine. Your want list of price + miles is always going to restrict you & if not careful may steer you into a car that ticks your boxes on the surface but may not after a few weeks owning
You know what budget you are happy with so look around that pricepoint but ignore the miles to a certain extent & find the best kept , best serviced , best conditioned car that drives without issues & that you are happy with .
There is a 97k car right now in the FS section that is a perfect example of where the Z4 market is
its a 2005 3 litre manual that looks well presented & reads like it would cost little to enjoy the best of a straight 6 Z4 model
Its £4900 so slightly over budget but £400 goes nowhere on a poor example
At least on your 3rd Z you should be learning the basics by now

I know mileage is just a number and even the way those miles were racked up is an important factor, I've just always stuck to lowing miles cars. Though I'm learning to think in the manner you have mentioned as the 37k '03 Cooper S I have is far from perfect! My 3.0Si was exactly what I wanted and I know I won't be able to replicate that but 100k has been drilled in to my mind as 'high mileage' despite knowing the engine is capable of double that.mr wilks wrote:Take a minute to consider before throwing your £ downdpereira wrote:I had just thought about how a smaller engine has more likely been stressed by pedal down driving than the 3.0. after seeing that merc on top gear last week with 800000 miles and the other 2 motors with 500000 it just shows how hung up we get on mileage when the fact is if they're looked after they can keep going on and on....these cars wear their mileage well
if its got tits or tyres..its trouble

I'd say ignore the mileage and go on condition and service and get a 3.0 !

Not a well loved engine? Based on what logic- I've had mine nearly 10 years and very much love it- never missed a beat and is fun to drive. Short lived in the z4 yes, but there are tens of thousands of 3 and 5 series soldiering round with the 2.2 M54 trouble free.cj10jeeper wrote:I'd steer clear of the 2.2 unless you find exactly what you want in spec and colourdpereira wrote:Narrowed down to either a 2.2 manual or a 3.0. OP with z's getting older buy on condition and history- find the right car, as long as it has 6cyl you can't go wrong.
