Speed Vs Economy, What would you do?

Just found out I've got to go be in London to pick up a Travel Visa for work, my plan is to drive down on Sunday and stay with friends in Surrey then struggle into London on the Monday morning, it's about 380miles door to door so do-able on 1 tank of fuel if I take it easy (stick to speed limits etc) or do I say sod it and drive faster and accept I need to stop for fuel and get there maybe 20 mins quicker.
I know which way I'm leaning but just wondered what others would do when faced with the same senario.

The crawl into the smoke on monday will knacker the fuel consumption, so you'll never do it on a tankfull. Anticipate a re fuel and drive however the mood at the time takes you.

I've tried this... it all goes well for a bit, nice steady speeds, gradual acceleration etc... then you realise you're sat in a fast sports car, behind a truck, getting covered in crap and stonechips, and bored silly, and think... sod this... FOOT DOWN.

i think no matter how you drive you'll end up filling up 3 times (there and back), but how much left of that third fill up will depend on how slow you drive.

once you hit the m25 expect 230 miles per tank.. that's how much i get (99 RON) with spirited driving.

to answer your question... i'd probably try to go slowly, but miserably fail.

Take it easy, roof down, relax enjoy the open air, then put your foot down and enjoy it all even more! :driving:

Roof down and cruise along the A-roads (A75?) until you hit the motorway, then roof up and stick at 70ish. Easy.

I personally think unless you're in a speed-restricted vehicle, if the limit on a motorway is 70mph and it's safe conditions to do so, that you shouldn't be doing less. You'd just piss off the trucks and slower vehicles lol.

Yeah, 20 minutes and a little extra fuel IMO isn't worth it. I'd stick to motorway speeds and tank up as needed.
If it's a nice day, I'd probably go topless too.

Personally i think i'd get lost in London so i would probably get the train :D
Then proceed to get lost on the London underground...
Agghh well hey

I never take my car anywhere near London - pointless because of the hassle driving in and out the crawling traffic, costs, congestion charging, parking and time.

Weekend trains are a doddle, cheap as chips if you prebook and choose carefully

I can catch the Virgin train to Euston in 1hour 20 Vs 4 hour door to door drive and costs less than the fuel.

Back 2 hours earlier and take the car out in Staffs. for an hour or so and enjoy the local rural roads.

That was going to be one of my other UK posts (I have so many  ) was what's a good place outside of london to stop so I can take a train in the rest of the way

See..yet another excuse to check out the posh cambridge tottie!
Tidy

Agree with CJ let the train take the strain driving in London is no fun.

Had to pick my car up from BMW Park Lane left the stealers around 10am Sat morn was a nightmare what is around 40 mins on a Sunday morning was 2 hours my family were getting worried thought i had pranged my new toy.

The other option if you are not fussed about staying with friends is get it sent by bike courier

Ah......Public transport, great idea if you can actually use it, 1/2 hr to the nearest train station that goes nowhere near where you need to be, so I would have to change trains somewhere along the line and accept the delays that incurrs.

I know all about driving in London spent the best part of 10 years commuting between Farnborough & Greenford, Chadwell Heath and Shepherds Bush.

I will probably go against the grain and take it steady, I've done something similar before and averaged nearly 40mpg, I hate stopping more than I have to and having to stop to fill up because I was driving at 80 instead of 70 would just p*** me off especially as it means you arrive at the same time you would if you had taken it stady.

It's looking like I might leave my car at a mates house and get dropped off in Uxbridge to get the Tube the last part of the trip. Last time I drove in london I got a parking ticket in the 30 secs it took to go into the Hotel to find out where to park.
