Check your screenwash pump filter!

Post by Nick C » Wed Nov 25, 2009 8:39 pm

I didn't even know the Z4 screenwash pump had a filter until this evening.

I could hear the pump operating, the jets seemed unobstructed, but the flow was more of a dribble.

Disconnect the wiring plug from the pump and the pump can be pulled straight up. It will probably bring the small filter with it, if not, just prise that out of the reservoir.

Once out give it a good clean, or renew it. The headlamp wash pump has a similar filter in place, so check it out.

It's a good time to thoroughly wash out the reservoir as well.

This is what the one on my car looked like -

No but just being a bit pedantic and wanted to make sure. :D

The container bottle is an akward shape so almost impossible to clean out inside once removed. The filters are fairly easy to get out and clean though.

The photo above looks like non-BMW screenwash may have been used. :)

I've unattached what I think is the wiring plug and then pulled black plastic cylindrical shaped thing out and some washer fluid leaked a little out of the hole that was left. But now I have no idea what to do. Is this the right bit. I can't see any join at all. I really want to try cleaning the filter as I'm fed up of the fluid only just hitting the bottom of the windscreen. Please can somebody help me?!?!

Am going to check mine as the entire tank is out due to trying to find a leak, which turned out to be a split hose on the headlamp washers.

Great catch :) I checked mine and the screen filter was indeed gunked up. I was surprised that the larger pump is the headlight washer, and the smaller one the windscreen.

I just did this - no gunk on the small filter... How the hell did you get the headlight washer one out though ? I couldn't get my hand in there.

Oh, and someone could have said that when you do this the contents of the washer bottle will flood your garage floor :x

I took the reservoir out. One bolt and a bit of jiggling :)
