List of Jobs for my new Coupe

Post by CraigP » Tue Aug 29, 2017 7:26 pm

Well I've had my Z4 Coupe now for 3 weeks or so and love it and intend to keep it for many year to come. The only thing is the more I use it the more I make a mental list of jobs to do on it to make it even better ! So have made a list of jobs to work through.
1. Paintwork - being Monaco blue shows ten years of swirls and scratches on, plus the odd resprayed panel, so am getting the whole car detailed in a months time which the detailers need the car for 2 to three days, its expensive but should come up gleaming... I hope. I would normally buy turtle wax colour magic ! the detailers are also repairing the drivers bolster where the black colour had worn off.
2. its two years next month since it was serviced and is due an oil change, so was going to get it done locally, so if anyone knows a good BMW specialist in Huddersfield, I did phone one up that also done minis and it was £180 plus VAT which was more than BMW.
3. I've got an annoying soft knocking noise on the rear passenger side, only hear it sometimes over bigger bumps sounds like something is rattling around loose in the bootwell if there was one, does nt sound a bad noise just annoying !
4. Cd Changer does nt work, tried to eject the cartridge and nothing, no power, so may need to check fuse ?
5. Spare key is dead it starts car but will not do the central locking, thinking of sending it off for refrub assume the battery is no good ?
6. Fog lights have condensation in, are they easy to take out and dehumidify and reseal or are new ones needed ?

All advice welcome

2. Peter van der veer in Marsden or Huddersfield BMW.
3. Check coil springs or exhaust brackets
4. Check cabling at rear of changer, think you might have to remove the rear shelf & partition. Look for an intravee install thread - it shows you how to do it.
5. Spare key is a PITA to refurb. Have a look at at BMkeys if you don't want to pay £140 that dealers charge
6. Known issue. Some have removed and resealed, others have bought new. Search for fog light threads, I'm sure there are a couple.

Have you tried putting the key on an electric toothbrush charger? Then you'll know for sure the battery has gone.

If you try the above and it's still dead, the spare key might just need re-programming. Especially if it hasn't been used in a while.

That is a little expensive for an oil and filter change but dont forget you need to buy 7lt of oil so even just buying the parts yourself, oil, oil filter and air filter from ECP will set you back nearly £100 inc VAT. In my experience indies tend to use the Castrol Edge although you can get cheaper oil.

Stockport isn't a million miles from Huddersfield. Try Darren Wood,

Thanks, took it to my local garage in the end which I regularly use, total bill £170 included new air, oil filter, oil flush / change, aircon filter and they also found rear exhaust hanger was broken, so welded it back which has now stopped the knocking, so all in all a happy bunny !

Yes the audiovox media bridge thing plugs in to the cd changer cable so unfortunately it is one or the other.

Thanks tom, I thought as much. Ironically up to a week ago, the word ipod appeared on my sat nav as a source, this has now disappeared when my iPhone is plugged in, so I cant select it, even the phone still charges on the cable, any ideas ?

How annoying! Have you found the main audiovox unit yet? It's like a kind of phone sized thing. When I had mine I put it somewhere around the rear bulkhead as this is where the connector for the CD changer lies. Unfortunately you will need to remove the rear bulkhead/boot trim to get to it I think. Sadly I think the company went bust but you should be able to find a manual for it somewhere I'd imagine.
Good luck with it, it's a decent thing to have if it works!

Hi Tom, not got clue where the main unit is, I just have a cable coming out at the front just above the ashtray with a iphone adaptor on it, I do have the manual though will see if I'm doing something obviously wrong as it definitely said ipod as a source when I bought the car, the only real change I've done is pair up my iPhone on the Bluetooth connection, I'm sure it cant be anything too hard :(

As TomK says, just remove the rear bulkhead cover in the boot. It's fairly straightforward on the M coupe and I would've thought easier on the non M without the battery in the way.

Once in there you'll be able to see the CD changer cable which will be plugged into the Audiovox unit. Try rebooting it by disconnecting it and reconnecting, that worked for me recently when my Intravee started turning my nav screen on and off intermittently.

You're looking for a plug like the green one at the bottom of this image which is the CD changer connection. Forget the other wiring, it doesn't apply here.

The CD changer plug and presumably your Audiovox unit will be situated centrally in the lower part of the bulkhead. In the image below it's plugged into the bottom of the Intravee unit (small black box) located to the right of the silver Alpine unit in the centre of the image. The Alpine unit is aftermarket so won't be present on yours.
