Ticking noise.

Post by ben g » Sun Jul 16, 2017 8:20 pm

My 3.0i M54 engine appears to have developed a ticking noise. I noticed it last weekend, whilst stationary in McDonald's drive thru. The ticking noise sounded very loud as the sound was bouncing back off the walls. The ticking gets faster as the revs increase.

It doesn't appear to be affecting anything. It drives perfectly fine. Oil levels are fine, Had an oil service a couple of months ago. Sounds like my First car, a corsa 1.2

Any ideas what it could be?

Noisy hydraulic valve lifter? I know the n52 can suffer this but not sure on your engine?

I've already upgraded the disa valve a few years ago. I installed i6's unit.

It sounds like the noise is coming from the drivers side of the engine (exhaust manifold side), opposite side to the disa.

Could be a blowing exhaust gasket or a small crestfallen in the manifold then.
