I have noticed over the last few weeks that there has been a patch on my bonnet looking lighter than the rest of it and today, after I have been away for the weekend, I have come home to find that the patch has grown and the area in which it is situated is also rough to the touch. Now I don't know if this is:

1 Just the paint work aging over time

2. Something more sinister, I should worry about

3. Some other issue that others have experienced on this forum

Finally has anybody had a bonnet respray recently so I know what sort of price I will be looking at to fix my problem???

Can you tell if it's in the paint or on it? It could be the lacquer on its way out, or some sort of deposit on it.
Bonnet resprays usually need to be blended with the wings and bumper so I've been told, but I guess it depends how (lucky?) you are...

It feels like the paint, doesn't seem to be a substance on it, but it is very rough to the touch

Guy doing my wings & bonnet has quoted £150 per panel for a sanding, respray & lacquer but no repairs for dents etc (there aren't any). What you're showing looks to me like "blooming" in the lacquer caused by an acid/alkaline being left there - perhaps bird droppings - which would etch the lacquer allowing water to ingress and cause the blooming.

I do live by the seaside, so it could be the dreaded seagulls, guess I have to bite the bullet and get a quote

I'd be tempted to see if it will polish up before doing anything drastic.

Where about are you?

I would try a bit of cutting polish on it and see if it removes/improves. At the end of the day even if you make it worse you'll still be paying the same for a respray.
It looks like a bit of rough/dry lacquer, the sort of thing you get in bodyshop's sometimes if the paint has dried a bit quick or reacted to something. However that usually happens straight after painting not weeks/months down the line.
How long have you had the car?
Bird poo is notorious for this sort of thing aswell, but it would need to be one hell of seagull to do that!

You could try wet sanding it, then cut & polish it - depends on how deep the etching is. Chipsaway (or similar) generally won't touch large patches on a bonnet, but a friendly car detailer would do a paint reading and quote you on fixing it - if the paints too thin, or the etching too deep, then a respray is really your only option.

As you're up Lancashire way, ping Mr Wilks or Marlon, they may know of a detailer? You could also post in the detailing section of the forum asking for recommendations?
