Mechanical whine - e86

Post by Tcochrane92 » Thu May 18, 2017 8:28 am

Just started noticing a faint mechanical whine coming from behind the drivers seat ( or maybe passenger too?)
It's quite quiet, only heard when idling and inside the car

Pitch doesn't change depending on throttle input or gear, same whether in 1st or neutral or park (auto box)

Anyone have any ideas?

Car is an E86 as per title

Thanks!

Only noticed so far with an almost empty tank. Will fill up this evening and see if it changes it

Hope it's not the fuel pump

If the tank is empty the top of the fuel pump will not be submerged..The fuel also helps to keep the pump cool.

This will make it sound louder..... Try not to run under 1/4 tank...

I have this... oddly enough though mine is loud when having a full tank, but silent when near empty..

Mine is the fuel pump on it's way out though, apparently it's a tank out job..

Yes

When the noise increases with the weight of fuel, the pump is knacked

Didn't notice the whining sound this morning with a full tank of petrol.

Is this just a design flaw or a sign that the pump is on its way out?
