Fault code: 5E40 steering angle Sensor Signal not plausible,Offset

Post by Jodd » Sat Oct 08, 2016 9:01 am

My sticky steering problem has gradually gotten worse over the last years, so I decided to take out the entire column in order to check and lubricate everything properly. After reassembly, steering was fine......for 30 minutes. Then I got the dreaded three yellow lights in the dashboard (handbrake, DSC and tire pressure).

Even though steering works fine, I dont appreciate driving around with a christmas tree in front of me.
It will also be a guaranteed MOT failure next year, so I need to get it sorted.

INPA says my offset steering angle is outside limits, and I have fault code "5E40 steering angle Sensor Signal not plausible,Offset"
I think maybe the steering angle sensor needs to be reset, but can't figure out how.

Can I do this myself, or do I need to take it to the shop?

Isnt there a procedure for that in INPA?
It's quite normal to have some kind of programmingprocedure for this (I've done this for other brands).

Are you sure you've mounted the angle sensor correctly? There's a mounting procedure written in TIS with a bunch of special tools, and it also says that when replacing the sensor it has to be programmed in, they reference Progman/SSS and according to youtube it can also be done in DIS:

Had a steering angle sensor error code on the wife's X3. Tried local Indy who had a go at resetting with a Bosch OBD handheld device and a laptop with software but code would come back after a few mins driving. Spoke to another Indy this time a BMW specialist who said it was a well known issue and needed the genuine BMW software to be calibrated/reset properly. Dealer was very unhelpful on phone clearly clueless and uninterested offering only a £100 diagnostic check or a quote for new sensor. Eventually found an Indy specialist with a genuine BMW hardware/software set up (ex BMW tech). £25 all sorted in 15 mins.

i had my steering angle sensor resetted this week, had the same error/issue. took 5 minutes at my regular indy shop. don't know which software he used. all my ABS/DSC related error codes also disappeard, apperently the Steering Angle Sensor has quite a big imoact in the way the car behaves...

Unfortunately, yes.

Winter has arrived, and so has the massive salting of roads in Norway.
I have put the car in storage until spring, when I will address the problem again.
Most likely, I will take it to the dealer and see if they are able to reset the fault code.

Still, I am a bit curious to what “offset steering angle” indicates and what it is monitoring.
If anybody knows anything about this, I am all ears

Did you reset the sensor already? If not: please do!

Quick update:

I was lucky enough to borrow a Autel Mot Pro EU928 diagnostic scanner last weekend.
This scanner has a reset option for the steering angle sensor.

I followed instructions on the scanner, and the yellow lights went away :)
Did a short testdrive, and everything seemed ok. Lets hope it stays this way.

Hi all, I'm seeing the same issue - steering angle sensor which I think is causing the ABS module to throw up a fault code.
I'm trying to get hold of some diagnostic software to recalibrate the steering angle sensor myself - something which apparently needs doing after having tracking done.
I've found a great guide over the last couple of days with a tutorial of how to program it - I'll dig it out ASAP and share in case anyone else has this problem.
If in the meantime anyone knows of any DIS tool I can get my hands on please let me know :)
