Steering shaking on braking

Another source of vibration when braking can be worn Lower Control Arm Bushings. This repair can be expensive (mostly labor), about $700 USD.

Hmmm... I'll whip the caliper off and clean it all up, then see what happens. Or maybe I'll go for a re-build kit.

I've replaced these. Luckily my dad has a workshop. Cost me £120 last time.

Steering shaking on braking

Post by Wildfire » Sun Oct 29, 2017 9:46 pm

Ok update:

Had a look today, both brakes are fine, spin freely. I can’t see any major issues at the moment. Disc and pad wear all looks good.

Unfortunately I did lose the small clip that holds in the wear sensor and may have damaged the wear sensor as the light is now stuck on!

New wear sensor to go on tomorrow, then back to the drawing board.

Any ideas before I send it in to my mechanic?

You can't easily see uneven pad deposits or measure warpage without a dial gauge. I would have re-dressed the discs as mentioned before. If no improvement then have discs skimmed or replaced. All very easy diy tasks.

Steering shaking on braking

Changed my discs on my Santa Fe this weekend, took less that an hour with a cuppa in the middle, car now right as rain and no more brake judder.

Pulsing from speed usually indicates warped discs, even if they a fairly new.

I’ve got to fit a new pad wear sensor this morning, so i’ll get the DTI gauge out.

Ok, pad wear sensor replaced, all good on that front. DTI out as far as I can tell the discs are good. I tried a few different areas of the disc.

Confused. I may just replace the discs and see.

Bushings? Is there play when shaking at 9&3? If not then likely pad deposits, try a few high speed runs to clean them up.

I've just had this. Seized caliper warped the disc, go for a drive, somewhere 70mph and when you get back feel the temp of the calipers. If ones hot compared to the other then it will be that one.

Steering shaking on braking

Have you had your tyre balance re checked? I wrecked a set of front discs on the ///MR, due to poorly balanced tyres. They where only a tiny bit unbalanced. I replaced the discs & pads, convinced they were the issue. Then over a few weeks the problem started to return. So I had the balance re-checked and re-balanced, until they were more or less perfect according to the guy who did them. The problem then diminished over a few weeks as the brakes cleaned themselves up. then vanished completely. I still have that set of disks fitted. :D

You would normally feel unbalanced tyres all the time though, particularly at motorway speeds. Shouldn't be anything to do with braking specifically.

I power washed the z before hibernation last year and didn't run the car down the road to dry the discs off . Woke her up a few months later and calipers where sticking . Ended up with warped discs . Cheap enough fix though

You would think so, wouldn't you. Took me three months and a set of front discs and pads to realise mine were slightly unbalanced though. :(
