Bonnet resprayed or not?

Post by edinburghjon » Fri Sep 15, 2017 4:05 pm

I'm getting my car detailed & ceramic coating my bonnet has 10 small chips. Do I get a bonnet respray or get them filled in, or I could just leave it & get the detailing & ceramic coating.

Bonnet resprayed or not?

Post by rally-chris » Fri Sep 15, 2017 4:21 pm

If it's just a few chips then touch them in, or if you aren't confident about doing it yourself ask someone to do it for you (e.g. a good printshop or detailer). If you are going to do it yourself buy some small modelling/art paint brushes as the integral brushes on touch up boots are always far too big.

You could get the bonnet resprayed, but a good painter will want to blend it out onto the wings and front bumper to avoid an obvious colour mismatch so it will end up expensive, and you'll get some more chips as soon as you use the car! I just had the lower half of my front bumper done (due to damage) but I was quoted another £450 or so to do a full front end respray.

I suppose it depends on how OCD you are detailing wise. If it's a road going car, particularly a daily and not a show car I'd just touch them in. Worst thing with front end chips you can spend a fortune sorting it and the next time you go out in it pick up some fresh ones.

Hi OP, Unless you're prepared to fork out for a full front end respray I wouldn't bother as you'll notice the paint colour difference which will annoy you more than the chips in the first place!

FWIW I had enough chips that irritated me I sanded it down and took it to a shop and had it wrapped. Granted black is a lot easier to match colors to.

"Chipsaway" may be able to do a smart repair.

Tried chips away and they always come back the same too light a colour.. too big a area... excuse excuse. They only seem to like corners and dark colours. I don't even bother now. As per the others comments. A good sprayer will always want to blend in to the wings so I wouldn't bother.
