BMW extended warranty.

Post by TONYMOR » Wed Jul 26, 2017 12:11 pm

My BMW warranty which I extended from 2016 till ... renewal in three days time is a do I don't I.
It's not cheap and various forums debate the worth .
I had m o t and a oil / filter change at a non BMW workshop.
Suprisingly I emailed warranty department today and surprisingly they say I can continue with the warranty despite it not having BMW service and book stamp.
Interesting reply.now which way to go.?

Good point . The only claim I would make the excess was about the same as the repair cost .

Depends on which engine you have and the mileage that you do, if you have a non-turbo engine I would say no.

I have a 35i and do 30k miles per year, so expecting problems at some point with turbos, injectors, DCT, HPFP, etc

Difficult to comment as you haven't specified the car or cost and type of warranty.

I had it on my E86 for 2 years and it was well worth it at £35 a month as it had quite a bit done. (New gearbox, Bluetooth mic etc)

Also had it on my E85M for a year at £90 a month and I didn't need to use it at all.

Is that comprehensive cover or driveline only and with £100 or £250 excess? How many miles a year in the zed?

Do you have a vat receipt for the oil and filter change?

Comprehensive with £250 excess and only 4.000 miles annually.

I went with the comprehensive and breakdown with no excess on the basis that I retain the kind of peace of mind a new car would provide in terms of warranty, recovery and relatively fixed cost. It was around £690 for the 35is.

I'd be more inclined to self insure and bank a certain amount each month if it was a non-turbo with manual transmission.

You need this for the warranty to be valid. Read the t and cs. This is the first thing they will check when you claim and void if you do not have.

Maybe conveniently they didn't mention the invoice so as to wriggle out of a claim.
Could be wise not to renew then .

These are complex cars and arent cheap to work on. I bought my Sdrive35i in May and the day before I collected the car which had 55k miles on it and a full BMW service history I put a BMW warranty on for £540 - in the past ive paid monthly and saved a few bob when selling the car on before 12 months but this time I planned to keep the car. Well I came across a 35iS and couldnt resist it and a mate bought the 35i off me. When I left home to deliver the car to its new happy owner I got a power steering assistance failure message which after a while vanished but after delivery came back up again with the steering clearly no longer being assisted. The car was taken to a BMW dealer and after investigation was found to require a new steering rack and other bits and pieces (parts cost approx £1500), the car was in the workshop for a day which when added to the cost of the investigation and parts would probably have set me back the best part of three grand. The warranty covered everything except the £100 excess - thankfully the fault occured after the initial 30 days otherwise I wouldnt have been covered. Would I put another warranty on next year...well I'll let you guess
Incidentally, Ive had extended warranties on Mercs and Landrovers, in recent years, much more expensive than BMW's offering but again in both cases ive had turbos replaced with no cost to me and definately well worth the outlay on the warranty.
