28i MPG from enthusiastic Driver

Post by Twin Turbo » Tue Sep 13, 2016 3:34 pm

I know quite a few peeps have made comments on my MPG not been much better than-than a N54 engine.

I would like to share that the MPG is 10MPG greater than my old E92 335i - which is same engine as the Z4 35i

I put this into context - the 28i is a great little engine - I am pleased that the forum now accepts that the 28i has an greater turn in than its bigger brother 35i -

I have been able to get 45MPG and 521 miles out of an tank - but rather pull my teeth out - also been down to 10MPG and achieving only been on track.

Compared to my MPG on the 335i been low twenties

So the reason why my car reports poor MPG is not the car but driver! :driving:

Best I've managed was 41 mpg on motorway with cruise set for long periods. My average which includes round the doors and about 80 mile a week to work stop start A roads ( I only take it two days a week ) is 28MPG that stays the same week after week. Love the car so pleased with the MPG. Our C3 diesel manages 57MPG Happy days :D

Don't think there's much between the 28i and 35i in terms of MPG.

The average number I see quoted by other users for the N54 is 30MPG. Anyone getting under 25 likely has engine problems such as bad injectors.

What I've learnt from years of using hire cars for foreign work trips is that smaller engines perform well in drive cycle emissions testing but not in the real world. The current hybrid Auris I'm using is the perfect example of that, the thing is only managing 40MPG!!

I can only comment on my own experience - if anything I drive more aggressively now in the 28i than I did in the 335i.

In my previous 330D I was averaging 38 MPG

Dont know how you can make a bold statement about my injectors as both were BMW AUC 335i and 330D

An increase of 10 MPG is a significant cost saving

Only draw back is the autistic sound

It's quite common for injectors to leak on the N54. Anyone getting 20MPG from an N54 should get injectors checked and also check for pre-lambda air leaks in the exhaust. A 30% drop against the average combined figure from other drivers really should set alarm bells ringing.

It seems the MPG you are achieving in the 28i is quite normal compared to other 28i owners.

Between 28MPG and 29MPG here, all town driving mainly so not bad at all :driving:

Based on that and a couple of runs showing higher averages im confident that over longer distances i would be seeing high 30`s.

I average 26 - 28 mpg in my 35is mainly town driving. But to be honest if I was bothered about mpg I would have stuck with my 116d which averaged 52mpg. I will take fun and POWER any day of the week :D
Supra twin turbo, great in a straight, rubbish around twistys
NSX, pretty cool but no heated seats and can't get top down
Z4 23i sdrive, now gone, got the wrong car, need more power.
Z4 35is loved and missed
Z4 M40i one word sums it up Wow!

As ever, mpg is highly subjective; many factors include speed of roads driven, distance, traffic and much more. There are rarely commonalities due to this unless your neighbour drives the same car, right beind you to the same place you work at every day.

4 pots should have some efficiency advantage over 6 pots, that's why manufacturers are going that way.

Frankly after paying 30+ grand on a car, it always bemuses me why people put such great emphasis on economy. If you wanted to save money, buy a small engined Toyota.

LOL - you guys make me laugh.. very 1 dimensional

I don't give a monkeys about MPG - but from previous constant negative remarks about my MPG is no better than a 35i

I am saving nearly £2,000 before tax due to the cheaper cost of ownership of the 28i

I drive more enthusiastically than I ever did in my previous 335i, its more fun to drive and quicker! :driving:

28i is not a second class car or poor mans 35i - I wished some of the purists treat owners with N20 E89 with equal respect.

Rant over lol

Some screen shots of MPG would settle the debate :P
