35i Is here !! Pics
After selling my e85 2.0L that I have owned for a couple of years I have decided to upgrade to the E89.
It will be my everyday car so thought I'd go for the 23i initially but wasn't too sure after a test drive , then I tried the 3.0l auto and loved it so decided to go for the 3.0L but manual. And then there was a local guy selling a 35i manual which was way out of my budget so thought I'd go and have a look at the 35i and explained to the guy that I am an enthusiaste and it just out of curiosity that I want to view it, and OMG as soon as I started the engine I thought that I WILL HAVE TO FIND THE MONEY SOMEHOW !!!!!
I had a quick test drive and the car was sublime and very clean, LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT I GUESS !!
NOW I have made him and offer and we agreed a price but informed him that I will have to take the car for a long drive like 15 - 20 miles before parting with my money.
1 - I am picking up and testing the car this weekend so any tipS will be highly appreciated from the 35i owners. it is a manual ... changing gears seemed a but stiff compared to my 2.0L
2 - I will be driving in the country lanes mainly 50 - 60 mph with no traffic and stretched straight lanes - what do you think the average MPG would be (mixed driving)?
I know them cars are not bought for fuel economy and that I shouldn't be using it as an everyday car but I just can't help it !!!!!1

I am going for the kill !!! Yessss 35i TIPS PLZ
Hi Ben, I have an October 2014 35i manual. In my nearly 2 years of ownership it's been fault free.
Gear changing is silky smooth, but with just over 300 bhp on tap you need to be sweet on your clutch/throttle/rev/change co-ordination or it'll not feel right. You'll drive it of course, but it may be a few trips down the line before you drive it well.
I'm still amazed at how frugal it can be if you choose to drive smoothly. A recent week away (just over 1000 miles) saw 31.7mpg overall, but if you start hoofing it all over the place (as you will at times, because it's intoxicating) you could be down to 27 / 28. But for me, even with a bit of turbo buffoonery thrown in at times the average is 30ish. I have to say it's not my daily driver so I can't help with a real world "Urban" cycle - but I'd imagine you could influence that with your driving style.
Make a written list of EVERY feature on the car and take it with you. Try all of them out several times and don't feel rushed in doing so. Does the roof and the raising of the 4 side windows work smoothly each time? Does everything re-seat itself in the same place each cycle? Physically tick the items off as you go.
You haven't mentioned how many miles the car has done but if you have a doubt about the gearbox spend time going through every gear, both on the power and off. Be nice about it and not abusive, but be thorough. Listen for noises, check for backlash in the drive train. There has to be some (the car wouldn't move otherwise) but if it seems excessive or clunky then it's time to raise a question mark. But unless it's something obvious don't get paranoid about it.
Get the car on an empty car park and drive it slowly in a figure of 8 - trying full lock each time. Listen and feel for untoward noises and clunks from the steering, ball joint area etc.
Look for panel alignment, gaps, flushes and general fit - especially the plastic formed parts. Don't have a general appraisal - scrutinise each individual panel in it's own right. Get down so that your eye is level with or just below the car's waistline and look down the length of it for bodywork ripples etc. Do this standing up and you'll likely miss any misalignment. The worst you should see is maybe a bit of "orange peel" in the paint.
Look for evidence of water leaks. Sounds silly I know but smell the carpets especially in the boot area and battery well. Check the lights and lenses for water ingress and cracks.
Run your fingertips around the wheel rims and feel for damage / poor repairs. Your fingers will tell you what your eyes will miss.
Be thorough - if this is your final appraisal before you buy then take your time. If you're through in less than an hour you may have been a bit quick. Oh yes - go through all of the paperwork and history.
This is getting a bit long winded - I'll leave it to others to chip in and do the engine bit.
Good luck with it, sounds like you may finish up with a pretty rare car.

Great call, I started with a 23i and upgraded to a manual 35i - never looked back. The 23i was a top car but the engine really needed working, and pulling away it felt like it was towing a caravanbenv6 wrote:1 - I am picking up and testing the car this weekend so any tipS will be highly appreciated from the 35i owners. it is a manual ... changing gears seemed a but stiff compared to my 2.0L

The manual box can be a bit snickerty particularly 1st to 2nd but get some momentum and it has a great solid mechanical feel. It needs 'deliberate' gear changes - it's not the "knife through butter" change of an Audi or Porsche 'box but I like the sense of purpose to it.
I use mine every day on a 120 round mile commute at motorway speeds and get circa 375-400 miles to a tank, think that works out around 33 mpg.
I have run-flats and to be honest other than on the worst road surfaces it rides as you'd expect a sports car to ride. Some on the forum have replaced with non run-flats and get a more saloon-like ride.
Last observation, my 23i had the full msport adaptive suspension which I found way too hard for normal roads, and changes the steering dynamics so you have to be much more aware of the long bonnet and turn in point. Even pushing my 35i around Shropshire country lanes the standard set-up makes the car responsive and gives plenty of feedback... enjoy your 35i

I was on a run with Metallicker who has a manual 3.5i and I was in my 2.8i and we had identical mpg of 26.6 after about 80 miles of spirited driving - my 3.5iS with the DCT is giving about the same - should get better once she has freed up - if it has the 296 wheels I think it was 2011/2012 where the wheels had a problem - I have had three cars now and all have been fine

Early E89 had HPFP and Vanos issues which are well documented and should have been fixed under warranty. I like to hear it start up very quickly, without cranking more than a second or two with no rattly sounds or knocks. Their should be no warning lights or messages. It would be nice to measure the battery voltage and the tire tread depth and watch out for style 296 wheels (had serious cracking issues). Also 19" wheels are controversial because of hard ride. Newer runflats are ok IMO. In second and third gear you should feel the turbos almost at once.
The E89 is one of the most perfect sports cars and just as addictive as my new 67 Corvette was..

35i Is here !! Pics
Hi All, and many many thanks for all the help and advice. I have managed to get some quick pics as it needs a clean.
The Car is in showroom condition and drives like new with just 40k on the clock so very happy with my purchase.
My first priority atm is getting rid of the 296 wheels and the run-flats ( I keep on looking at Mr Wilks wheels !!!! ) but will have to wait for a couple of months as the car was bought with my hard earned cash so finances are very tight !!
My second priority is the Audio but that can wait as the straight 6 twin Turbo alone is like Barry White with his Orchestra.
And finally, I am thinking of changing the gear knob to the weighted one but not too sure yet as the gearbox is very smooth and sweet.
Please feel free to suggest anything else
