I've recently bought a 2012 e89 20i , the valve in the exhaust seems to be open all the time is this correct ? What is its purpose ??

It's there to quieten down the car at certain revs. It's open all the time because either it's broken or someone has modded it to stay open to get a little more exhaust noise. No issue either way.

There is a rubber tube usually attached to the valve on the back box - if this has been taken off the valve will remain open :thumbsup:

Mine does still have the pipe there but it's open on start up and idle , is this correct I can shut it with my finger but it springs open again:thumbsup: :thumbsdown:

I clamped the vacuum pipe with a cable tie. It does seem to give you more growl at lower revs. Easy to do and easy to reverse.
