E89 Front Shock Absorbers

Post by philip27 » Sat Jun 18, 2016 4:05 pm

My Z4 needs the front shock absorbers replacing both are leaking slightly. Anyone got any ideas on how much it would cost to get them replaced?

Also are there are any diagrams of the front suspension assembly I have been looking online to try and see how it all fits together.

My car is on a 59 plate and is a 23i. I believe they all have the active suspension setup.

Active suspension is an optional extra, most cars have fixed non adaptive suspension. You can tell the difference by a bell shaped protrusion at the base of each shocker.

The shockers therefore can differ in cost markedly.

If you put your vin into realOEM.com you should be able to get a blow apart diagram that you need.

I can't help with pricing as every dealer or garage will be different. A lot of people have gone after market and replaced everything to get better handling.

Get the feeling this could be a costly repair I can only seem to see the standard shock absorbers on most sites.

Thanks for the info always thought it was standard across the range.

£180 for a pair of Bilstein B4s for E89 - if you don't have active suspension - do you? Can't imagine it's more than a 2 hour job, why not get a jack and some tools and DIY?

Looking at £1600 for the dealer to sort it out ! Trying to find aftermarket options but everything so far is for the standard system.

£450 per damper. The adaptive ones seem to fail regularly on these cars.

You can go aftermaket but you need a little device to plugin to the adaptive module to prevent the car bringing up an error. Check the ECS tuning website for parts.

Is it AUC/Warranty?

I started up the warranty again on mine recently as its knocking on now and want the peace of mind, esp at £1600 for new shocks!

That's crazy, though I bet the book time is about 3 hours... Change all round and disable for cheaper while having 3 good shocks to sell?

Unfortunately not. Wise decision getting the warranty started back up. It's the price of the parts that's crazy.

Looking into various options at the moment. One of those things unfortunately just need to find the best way to get it sorted.

Active suspension on a 59 plate was an extra at £930.00 so not difficult to understand BMW replacement cost

I still think it's very steep especially that's it's just the fronts that need doing.

Struggling to find suitable aftermarket setups as not been able to find anything on how to by pass the system yet. Starting to think I will just pay it and move on.

What about buy and DIY fit? Be interesting to see how much the shocks are without the labour.
