V5C - DCT, auto or manual?

Post by spanna2000 » Tue May 24, 2016 8:29 am

My DCT shows as manual on the V5C registration certificate - is that correct? I know its an automated manual box of sorts but it's not manual by any other method of judging it. E.g. if I were licensed to drive auto cars only would I be able to drive a DCT?

My 35is reads Auto on he V5C and DVLA site.

It is an auto and if you only had a license to drive an auto you would be entitled too. Wonder how they've made such a mistake.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/guidance-fo ... daptations

"A vehicle with automatic transmission is defined in regulations as `A vehicle in which the gear ratio between the engine and the wheels can be varied only by the use of the accelerator or brakes’. In general a vehicle without a manual clutch is regarded as an automatic."

"Semi-automatic systems
With these the driver has to select the gear required by movement of the gear lever as with a manually controlled gearbox, but there is no clutch pedal. For driving test and licensing purposes these vehicles are regarded as automatics."

Its not the first time I've read on here about a model being listed wrong on the V5C but possibly the first time the transmission was listed wrong..... Although it is often referred to as a dual clutch manual so can see why whoever registered it may have put that

Clear as mud.
Yep that's random.....

According to this:
A vehicle in which the gear ratio between the engine and the wheels can be varied only by the use of the accelerator or brakes’
Anything with flappy paddles is a manual....

But then
In general a vehicle without a manual clutch is regarded as an automatic
Oh wait no its an auto again

I've edited my original post as there's a bit more definition (was initially hidden on the main page).

DCT = Automatic.

Maybe ;) :D

I agree with above; clutch pedal = manual, no clutch pedal = automatic

Seems to be how it works for your driving license anyway...

My V5C shows as manual for my DCT.

Insurance also thinks it's a manual too. Not bothered bringing the issue up with anyone as it's purely semantics.

I wonder if this is a 35i thing where the DCT was specified by the original owner as an option.

I did advise the insurer it was an automatic - I think you have to at least do that to prevent any attempt to avoid the claim because of non disclosure.
