Fitting non-RFTs - need new TPMS valves?

Post by Avallon » Fri May 20, 2016 10:59 am

Hi,

Quick newbie question - if I swap my tyres for non runflats, will I need to do anything about the tyre pressure sensors or can I just pick any tyre that fits and get it fitted?

Thanks,
Av

Is this on an E85/E85 or E89?

I believe they are needed on the E89 but not older models

If you're just changing from RFTs to non-RFTs on the same rims then just leave the valves in and then do a reset when the new tyres are fitted and pressurised. If you're also changing the rims, then you'll need to fit valves with sensors.

This depends on what year the car is.

Being as the question is posted in the E89 discussion thread then isn't it reasonable to assume that the car is an E89 and no older than 2009? My answer is based on that assumption and that E89 cars from 2009 onwards use 433MHz TPMS sensors together with my own recent experience in fitting non-RFTs.

There are 2 different TPMS systems on E89s depending on the year of manufacture.
The earlier E89s do not need special valves in the wheels, the later ones ( after 2014?) do.

Checked to see what TPMS sensor works on a 2010 E89 and it appears that the HUF model is the same as for my 2016 E89?

Im sure that info is wrong.
Ours have normal valves.

Our 20i was built in February 2014 and just uses the ABS to detect deflation in any tyre, hence the need to reset it periodically
I believe later models have a more sophisticated system requiring the special TPMS (sensor) valves as with our Evoque.

Before 3/2014 you’re only likely to see active TPMS in cars supplied for very hot climates where RFT tyres overheating when properly inflated was a concern. The pre-03/2014 system is an older design and uses a different model of HUF sensor to the post-03/2014 cars. All after 03/2014 all E89s use an in-wheel sensor and while the packaging for both sensors is the same the systems are NOT cross compatible.

Oh, it is worth noting that some UK cars randomly get supplied with the hot-climate kit which on the E89 includes active TPMS sensors.

My car is a 64 plate - so does that mean I need new sensors if I move away from RFTs?

Probably will need TPMS sensors but if you're just swapping tyres on your existing wheels there's no need to change the sensors.
