Windscreen replacement, what to look out for?

Post by Oakleyextreme » Sat Feb 06, 2016 4:10 pm

Has anyone had there windscreen replaced in there E89?
I've got mine booked in for replacement in just over two weeks time. I have sat nav and I think I'm right in that there is a cable that run just behind the screen which I will warn the man who is fitting the screen, is there anything else I should know about to warn the fitter?
Cheers. 8)

I would make sure and prove with the fitter that everything works prior to his work. Do you have auto wipers as I think these work from the sensor on the screen.

Definitely not this. Sit and watch them do it.
Why is it that people who can't take advice always insist on giving it?

Yea have rain sensors but that something the fitter should know as he can see them on old and new screen, it's things that are hidden behind screen like the sat nav cable.
I'm not that trust worthy when it comes to my pride and joy lol, specially when the fitters get a few weeks training and then left to replace screens lol.

I had mine replaced in the summer last year by Autoglass. admittedly i had to show them how the trim on A post and and top of the windscreen came off, but they used a very kinky cable winding thingy and they did not use a knife anywhere near the car. quite impressive to see it come out with the wind up cheese cutter.

Time for a Rant
Had my car booked in today for wind screen replacement, requested a afternoon fitting as I work shifts but they text yesterday to say fitting between 08:05 to 10:05 so I thought ok I'll stay awake as I'm on night shift.
11:00 am and still nothing so tried calling my local auto windscreens office and after 10 mins on hold I hanged up and replied to yesterday text appointment to say rebook.
Woke up this afternoon to receive sorry we missed you card from fitter who turned up 13:10.
Phoned up the number left to rebook a new day and all they can say anytime between 08:00 to 17:00 and won't know a time until the day before, not very helpful when I work shifts, customer service gone right down hill, no personal interaction with local office we just a ref number to a central booking office.
So now sorted out a date and booked a days hol in March.
Watch this space lol.
Sorry for Rant thinks it's lack of sleep.
I feel better for that.

Had mine replaced last summer due to stone chip/crack. Done by AA windscreens though insurance, no probs. I have sat nav, that never came into it. It still works! Rain sensor OK as well.

I phoned the main dealer where I bought the car new just 12 months earlier on what options there were, they said its with/without rain sensor, nothing else.

It has taken us 3 weeks to get another windscreen on our Discovery. After a lot of delay they turned up, fitted a new screen and then decided that they should never have fitted it because of a bloody great scratch right in the driver's line of sight. Couldn't come back for a week or so because the replacement screen was damaged and also needed the glue from previous fitting to properly cure. Then cancelled because the weather was crap - what do they expect in February?

Yesterday 2 van with 3 guys turned up. At long last we have a new screen!!!

Before he starts the job make sure he has the correct windscreen..They fitted the wrong one to mine first time. Ensure that the shaded bit, top centre, on the new screen is as big as the original. Get him to take the cover off your car, the one behind the mirror, and see if it hidden behind the shaded bit on the new screen. He also broke several cowling clips doing the job.

Well I had my windscreen fitted today and after my rant about time keeping and wrong time window by text on the 16th Feb I'm very glad to say I'm very impressed with the technician who fitted my screen today.
He was very careful how he removed the screen.
You could see he takes pride in his work.
Top job auto windscreens specially the fitter who visited me today.
One happy Z4 owner here :D :D :D
