KERMIT1970 wrote:Stuart, I know the origin of the wheels. Italian made still in boxes & the boy who had them only used them on his e89 for 6 months. Don't have a problem using them on my car. Probably better quality then oe wheels lol

I've heard that the rims crack on the oe wheels :D

They'll probably have an Italian approval house stamp/mark on the wheels.
If not a CE mark !

All jokes aside, on this forum we hear of the failures of the BMW kit but I can't remember reading about any replica wheels failing ?

What I meant by "rep" was, rep of BBS, aka. cheap Chinese made wheels with no x-ray checking, not able to be balanced properly, made of cheese. I'm not comparing to BMW, they are rubbish too (some models). The M wheels are made by BBS too. I bought BBS for mine after the OE cracked.

BBS make many OEM BMW alloys that also suffer splits predominantly due to hard sidewalls of runflat tyres
Some rep wheels are decent , some are not

Or the wheels haven't been designed or manufactured correctly to accommodate the stresses involved?

I'm sure the wheel designers / engineers will have had the full design brief .

Seems strange though how the majority of damaged rims occurs on the rears where the tyres have smaller profile therefore less give ?
Not just one particular wheel style either , it mirrors across the board MV4s / style 296 / Elipsoid
You would expect any damage to be from the front if due to potholes etc :?

I've no doubt the runflats transmit more force thro to the rim and cause it to crack / split - all I say is that the rim hasn't been made strong enough to accommodate those forces.

Most definitely so , the 19inch MV4s can often be found with 4,5,6 splits in the rear rims whilst none in the fronts :? strange but true

I posted this before. Speaking to my mate he's warranty manager last year about these wheels cracking he told me Bmw don't have a problem in any other country with cracked wheel except the UK. Says it all ! The state of the roads is shocking.

Not true. They have a problem in Europe and Asia too. For the Korean market they released an updated wheel for the Z4 (my wheel type) which included a thicker inner lip on the inside of the rim. Unfortunately BMW didn't "export" this "fix" very quickly, and we are slowly seeing it enter the UK market.
