Steering wheel not straight

Post by petrolhead » Mon Jul 27, 2015 2:05 pm

I recently changed the steering wheel to an M One.

I have recently noticed the wheel is not in the straight ahead position when driving straight ahead :(

Went to my local 4 wheel alignment company and everything is spot on, when the wheel is in the straight ahead position, so any idea why the wheel is not straight when driving

This is a photo of the wheel when the car is driving straight

You must not have had the wheels perfectly straight when you replaced it. On the E85 there is a small notch on both the wheel and column to line up- may be worth a look and see if e89 is same

The same happened to me when I fitted a MFSW to my roadster. I had lined up the notch at the bottom but had to move it a couple of splines to get the steering wheel to line up correctly. A real pain in the arse, but worth it to get the thing lined up properly. :x

I had wondered that but the E89 wheel had a notch and marks but I will check...

However this does not explain what I got the wheel aligmnet don this morning the steerring wheel was set at the straight ahead position and then the tracking done.

Could there be more to this ie something to do with the electric power steering system and some sort of delive in the stalk ring

Edit: the wheel can only go on one way

The only thing I could do would be to machine the flat off so the wheel will fit in any position, but that sounds drastic

The other thing I could try is adjusting the track rods, 1/4 turn out LHS and 1/4 in RHS

Edit: This is what I did and now sorted
