35iS ordered. Noob question about rim offsets.

Post by DeenLoon » Sun Apr 05, 2015 11:21 am

Hi all,

Just ordered a 35iS (Valencia orange with black roof) to replace my 18i MSport :D . Chapter 2 of my mid-life crisis story, if you will. I'm looking to replace the rims with some 8.5 x 19 Front and 9.5 x 19 Rear but the site I'm looking at has various options regarding offset. As I'm a late-comer to the world of "souping up" cars, I'm at a loss to know which numbers to go for. The tyres I intend putting on will be 235 on the front and 265 on the rear. Can anyone advise on what I should be ordering to get the widest stance without having to modify the arches?

Apologies if this is a frequently asked question. I did have a look in the forums but couldn't find the answer.

Ta much in advance

P.S. The rims I'm looking at are the following:

8.5 x 19 ET 35 front
9.5 x 19 ET 33 rear

That's what I currently have and what seems to be the general fitting advice for the E89 Z4.

At £1k for rims & another £1k for decent tyres, would it not be cheaper to just spec the car with wheels you could be happy with?

Just a thought.... seems a bit of a stretch to spec up a brand new car & pay for wheels you don't want :(

Hi Matt. If the dealer offered wheels anything like the ones I'm looking at, I would've definitely ordered them. As it is, I'm not overly keen on what I can get "over the counter" so I've spec'd the car with the freebies and will happily pay out a bit extra in order to have a more individual looking car. I'll use the BMW rims for winter tyres instead.

Cheers for the feedback :)

Correct offset is ET 29 front and ET40 rear, normal rule of thumb is +/- 5 is okay without fitting spacers, however if you want to bring the rim out further then allow for this

As you are fitting alloys and tyres in sizes that are not BMW approved for the Z4 (see manual), you could come a cropper with BMW for your warranty for any component related to steering, suspension and transmission.

Spec it wth 326M's which look stunning on the E89 IMO - sell them on. Brad new set of 326M's with Bridgestones will be snapped up for £1500. Will offset the cost of the BBS wheels. Having had CSL's on my previous E89 however, I'd have the 326M's any day.

Hi sars,

I fitted after market rims to the 18i as soon as I got it home 18 months ago. When it went in to have some work done, the only thing the workshop were stroppy about was the fact I had painted my hubs! In fact, most of the staff were very complimentary about the rims. I guess it depends on the dealer.

That's a thought. Dunno if I can change spec now that the order has gone in but will ask the question and see. Cheers

Let me know if you do. I'd be really interested in the 326M's. Cheers.

It won't tell you everything but it's a good guide. I've just done 600 miles in 3 days in my new 35i and the noise from the 326M's drive me nuts. I've got used to the quirky steering / firm ride etc of the run flats but the tyre noise is appalling. I'm now looking at new wheels and non run flat tyres. The only thing stopping me is the BMW warranty issues, insurance and carrying cans of gunge in the car in case of a flat.

Yet to decide.

The 19" 326's are if I remember right £850 extra cost. But worth it imo ! But watch what your doing fitting custom wheels to a brand new car, make sure offsets are spot on or you'll ruin it

I'm guessing you don't have Adaptive Suspension? 35i and 35is are significantly different in ride quality due to suspension set up. Don't hear the tyres because of the sound of the engine and exhaust which is a joy!
