Defrosting the car
Hi All,
Is there a safe way to defrost my car and nip back in the house where it is warm and toasty?
When I picked the car up the stealer was mentioning some clever way of doing this but I was not paying attention (Too busy in awe of my new Z4's looks).
Can I have the car fired up, locked and me in the kitchen supping cocoa?
Cheers

Re: Defrosting the car
You could start your car, leave the keys in the ignition, and hope that it is still there when you go back to it.............

Re: Defrosting the car
There is something in the manual about this but not sure if its to heat the car or cool it.
I think it said you have to set a timer for when you want the blowers to come on.
I dont see how it can generate enough heat though without the engine running.

Didn't think it was good for them to be stood running from cold...
Just boil the kettle, pour boiling water onto freezing, iced windows and wait.
(that's a joke - never do that)

Re: Defrosting the car
I've never heard of anything that can allow the car to defrost. Its illegal to leave a car running unattended, for environmental and safety reasons among others. There is a residual heat function, this is to allow heating when the car is turned off as it uses residual heat from the engine, which of course is no use if your car engine is cold.

Re: Defrosting the car
How about
1. Start Engine
2. Turn defrost on full
3. Get out
4. Lock car with 2nd key
5. Sip Cocoa and watch out for the Environment Officer
Does this work?

Yesterday I couldn't even get into my car to warm it up! both the doors were frozen shut and no amount of de-icer seemed to help.

Re: Defrosting the car
It used to be possible with some to start the engine, then stop the engine remove the electronic key and then start the car again. then you can lock the car.
But as aboe it is an offence to leave a running vehicle unattended.

Ditto....had to resort to some luke warm water on the door glass.....not ideal.mattstav wrote:Yesterday I couldn't even get into my car to warm it up! both the doors were frozen shut and no amount of de-icer seemed to help.
I've got some "Reload" that can be used on glass..gonna try that to see if it stops the sticking....failing that some Gummi Pflege.

Re: Defrosting the car
As above, you can start the car then stop it and remove the key and then restart it, it doesnt seem to work if you open the drivers door after you first stop it as this appears to reset the process. .

Re: Defrosting the car
Jim you can do this as you have comfort access. You start the car and keep the key on you, then close the car lock it, and leave it running....and the car is locked until you come back to it.

Cheers Nick......still won't help when doors are iced shut but worth remembering for the very cold mornings. As my car is parked on my drive can do this.Stark wrote:Jim you can do this as you have comfort access. Re: Defrosting the car
Leave it to defrost naturally and phone the boss tell him you'll be late but not sure when. He'll understand.

Yepp I do this with M135i with comfort access, just lock the car with engine running.Stark wrote:Jim you can do this as you have comfort access. You start the car and keep the key on you, then close the car lock it, and leave it running....and the car is locked until you come back to it.
I thought starting the car and then switching off and removing fob from dash and restarting without fob wasn't supposed to happen as basically a theft risk.

Re: Defrosting the car
Get your better half out of bed, tell them to make you a cocoa, then tell them to go start your car and stay there until its warm,
Then finish your cocoa until they return,
I must add this did not work for me,and resulted in several sick days from work due to third degree burns(cocoa related).
