Winter tyre pressures
Hi all
Just put my winters on ready for the deluge that not doubt won't arrive, but was wondering what pressures to use. They're 225/45/17 non run flats on an msport with standard suspension (though the extra comfort might justify the lowering springs now).
At the moment I've followed the 2.9/2.4 bar rear and front as per the sticker but these give what appear to be an awfully large psi of around 42/35. That seems rather high for car tyres.
Oh and Mr wills the 5 series wheels look rather good. I think the et brings them out slightly and makes it look rather mean. Thanks

Re: Winter tyre pressures
Get some pics up mate pressure sounds waaaaaaaaaaaay over would have thought 32/34psi or thereabouts would be nearer the mark

Re: Winter tyre pressures
The tyre pressure may be stamped on the tyres sidewall.
I use 32psi front and rear on my Z3 which is wearing 225/40 R18.

Re: Winter tyre pressures
Cheers Mr WIlks, i'm currently sorting a photobucket account, which i should've sorted when i joined as i've yet to produce the obligatory "this is my car" post. Will add some on there, though due to the appalling weather, they're not going to be the cleanest of shots!
Will have a look around for pressure, buts thats pretty much what i thought, around the 32/34psi range.

Re: Winter tyre pressures
I would suggest a few Psi more than those indicated by BMW for that tyre size to account for them being non-RFT's, however a few psi either way will not do the tyres harm just wear, the best is to see what you prefer, comfy ride or better turn in.
The pressure indicated on the side wall is the MAWP of the tyre not what it's supposed to run at, as that is dependant on the vehicle and its mass
oh and nice wheels

Re: Winter tyre pressures
Cheers, i think the 5 series alloys look really good, the head on doesn't really do them justice. Im thinking of getting some 10mm spacers for when the 18's go back on after winter to keep the stance.
Will drop the pressures to 32/34ish and see how it goes.

Angie4m,
This is the best advert for winter tyres on the zed that I can think of, posted a few times but it brings back happy memories of my daughters first sledging expidition made possible by Falken winter tyres. The car is on a pretty steep hill, 50 yards up a Range Rover got stuck.

There are plenty who have said they are not necessary but how many winter tyre users have said they wouldn't bother again?

We see the opposite of this on the TV when the UK slithers to a halt with a dusting of 20mm of snow !

Re: Winter tyre pressures
I'm lucky that the GTR is 4WD and has winters, just need it back. If I need to go somewhere with the car and know in advanced I'll put a set on.ronk wrote:Winters, just do it !Angie4m wrote:Well if I do decide I need winter wheels I should be sorted. The cars done a whole 150 miles since I returned from Silverstone so quite a bit of effort when the car might not move at all. It may just live under its cover that I bought for it. But good to know I've got the option.

Re: Winter tyre pressures
4wd is only better to get you moving.
(I note the GTR has winters)
It really doesn't do anything much to help steer of stop!
I look at it as , if you can't get moving then your not going to crash Into anybody or anything!
We have a ski slope of a hill towards our estate and it cannot be used to get home without winter tyres. I've seen cars inc 4wd, with all wheels locked like toboggans on winters nights!
The owner of a hotel we stayed at in Chiavenna wouldnt use his range rover sport in the snow (std Pirelli? Rubber)
