I have extended BT in my X5, and it seems to mean that my phone can become another beacon to connect to, rather than just the BT from the car.
Current:
911-50 Black - unique spec
X5M - 575 hp of fun in a V8
Abarth 595 Comp.
Golf Clipper - collectors item
Z4 3.0si Black Sapphire
VW ID.3

Previous:
Z4M Silver Grey - non flimper spec (gone to Bing)
Z4 3.0 Toledo

I believe that extended Bluetooth also means you can (with iPhone at least) plug the phone into the usb socket with the standard lead to play music and charge at the same time, rather than having to use the y-connector...

Extended functionality depending on the features of the Bluetooth/USB device:
- View organiser data from the customer's mobile phone on the Control Display by selecting
'Office' from the menu.
- View contact photos from the address book of the customer's mobile phone on the Control
Display.
- Bluetooth audio streaming.
- At any given time, 2 mobile phone and one audio player can be paired via Bluetooth.
View album covers.
- Driver update for multimedia and telephony via USB interface.

Does it really include audio streaming? If so how? Similar topics on the forum say it doesn't. Guessing this topic is just older?

This depends on the model year of your car. BA Streaming was introduced late 2010/early 2011.

It gives you an upgraded media control module which allows you stream directly from the phone. The standard module is not up to the task.

It works pretty well. I had it in a 5 series and found it to work flawlessly (unlike Bluetooth streaming in Ford/Renault/Vauxhall cars). Although the 5 series version didn't show cover art, the cable was required for that.

Can this be retrofitted? I'm particularly interested in the audio streaming!

I'm not 100% sure but as with most options like that I would think it's just a case of buying the upgraded control unit then coding the car with NCSExpert (or getting a specialist to do it for you).

The problem comes with dealer visits. I'm not sure if the coding will get overwritten when the dealer updates the cars modules.

I found a BMW site that says what functionality each Bluetooth package has. Enhanced Bluetooth on gives you audio streaming if you have the navigation system as well. That explains why I don't have audio streaming.

My car has (apparently) extended bluetooth, but I don't have nav/idrive- it's also a 6/2010 so too early for audio streaming. What I get that "standard" bluetooth doesn't offer is beyond me!

According to the below site the only difference between standard and enhanced Bluetooth without Nav is that enhanced can load your phonebook to the stereo display.
