Have driven a 2.0 and 2.8 before I went for the 35i and the handling was marginally better than the 6cyl but engine sound was poor imo :)

Yes, I tried a nearly-new 2.0 4 cylinder car, 14 plate with about 2000 miles on it. I have to say I was pretty underwhelemed by the 2.0. I thought it was bordering on the sluggish, almost laggy (maybe was laggy). Not enough torque. Engine note tinny. 4 cylinder engine no match in smoothness for an inline 6. Maybe OK for some but I didn't like it.

I've now bought a 2.3iSsDrive (which is a 2.5 inline 6 cylinder of course).

I've gone from 23i to 28i to 20i, not a whole lot of difference IMO.

I have a 28i which is fantastic. I did have a 3.0 6 cylinder new on 54 plate. The modern turbo charged 4 cylinder is smooth especially linked to the auto box. Money was spent on several extra toys. So far so good.

Had a 20i M Sport out for 2 hours as a dealers demo. He said they had 4 new unregistered 20i's in stock so it's a popular model and sells quite well. So a safe and popular option - dealers won't risk getting stuck with inventory.

Pretty good for bumbling about but had to work it very hard to wrest any sort of "adrenaline rush" from it so I guess it depends on what you want from a car........ and where in your "car buying life" you are. I'd have loved this 30 years ago when I was buying Ford Cortina's and MGB's.

Ordered a 35i in the end for the extra 2 pots and a bit more of a kick in the pants.

But..... absolutely nothing against the 20i. It does it's job but at a different level.

The deals on the 2.0 were good - good enough to have me thinking about going for a poverty spec four pot.....back last November. Had a drive in a two 6 pots the 3.0 auto and a 35 both felt good.... difficult decisions indeed. Anyways a run in a 23 with the toys was the deciding factor. And the sound of the six suits the car - a four was very flat. yes performance wise the higher tunes on the turbo gave more performance and the temptation of getting a base and remapping it did appeal. But the noise..... its about the blip and the way that the six cylinder felt on the road. Yes with a 23 you do need to work it.

Yep the 23 is good. the fours are a little flat.... Try before you buy with the roof down and give it the beans under a bridge
