Thinking of some winter wheels. Will I need 18" to clear the brakes ? Don't think 17" would fit ! Anyone any info

It's an issue up north I'm sure, but I have kept my same wheels and tyres on in London and never been stuck anywhere....

Could try snow socks as an emergency backup but they are a bugger to put on esp on a low car like a Z

Re: Winter wheels 35is
I've never been stuck in 12 years running bm's. But thinking of changing them for the winter due to the state of the roads more than anything else. Think the government have started to cutbacks already Incase these clowns remove us from the union ! Lol
Don't bothered about rft's. Just the wheels & clearance

We all see the problems the south has when a couple of flakes of snow fall!Stark wrote:It's an issue up north I'm sure, but I have kept my same wheels and tyres on in London and never been stuck anywhere....
But seriously it's best to think about the stopping power of winter tyres over the standards!
It's that 7c point that they might stop you from a bump.
You don't stop playing when you get old - You get old when you stop playing!
So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

I sold a set of OEM BMW 17's to a guy with a 535d last year & they fit no trouble , I wouldn't expect there to ne a issue with your 3.5 Z but maybe a call to your main dealer will confirm thatKERMIT1970 wrote: Don't bothered about rft's. Just the wheels & clearance

Re: Winter wheels 35is
The standard BMW winter wheels for the E89 are 17s with runflats non staggered. I would double check with the dealer for the 35i to ensure brake clearance.
They're a must during winter to be safe as summer runflats can be a ticket to death below 7 degrees.
Tim.

Now well you Say below 7C......it does get to that in London often, and still yet not a problem......I'd be curious to see what % of motorists in London change to winter tyres, with no snow, and temps below 7C

At a guess very very few!
It's road temps I think they refer to and not air temp.
It's only a matter of time before the eu apply the same rules as in Germany. It probably makes good sense too. You wouldn't go out in the snow with your Guccis on would you?

Re: Winter wheels 35is
Never had any issue driving with standard RFTs during the winter, apart from in deep snow and ice. Simply adjust your driving to the conditions.

Re: Winter wheels 35is
We had winters on our 3 series last year, worked a treat - no snow what so ever!
Don't know if they'll fit the new 4 series otherwise they'll be up for sale as soon as the weather turns significantly colder.

now I'm about to have more time I've suddenly got less toys to play with!

Cause a holdup cos you get stuck on wrong tyres then you pay !!!Stark wrote:I guess you're right, and Italy too.......and also Brits driving across to those countries risking fines for not having winter tyres....
I think if you have a non fault bump you get a portion of the blame!
