Manual gearbox like a tractor...

Post by Boxertwin » Tue Aug 26, 2014 9:31 pm

I got my S35i in the 6 speed manual as the car was bought for weekend use and trips away, what I wasn't prepared for is how notchy the gearbox is :x so a scout round the old inter web revealed that I wasn't the only one...

Found a company called Storm Motorwerks that make beautiful weighted gear knobs, think a few folk here have bought one. Now having bought one, I then discovered the gearknob and gaiter in the 2013 onward models is a one piece unit. Now it can be cut off and sewn back into place, however I didn't fancy doing this...

So a call to my local dealer revealed that the gearknob gaiter is available in two versions...one the msport that I have at £155 and the non msport version for £50 and both fit. So I bought the non msport version and then sent off it off to bespoke leathering, a company recommended by Storm Motorwerks to change the whole thing to the same nappa leather as the msport version and to allow fitting of their gearknob.

Awaiting the new gaiter at the moment, should arrive tomorrow and as I don't have the car until Thurday, I won't know if it all goes to plan until then...what I can say is that I tried the new gearknob without the gaiter and it did make the gear changes a lot smoother...

Are you not worried that the Storm Motorwerks one will make your gear-stick look like some kind of chrome sex toy?

The M Sport shift knob that came in the 3 series was brilliant, I imagine it's the same for the Z. If you have the SE shifter it may be worth swapping to the M Sport version.

No not really, it looks pretty good. I have the mport gearknob in the car as it is the msport model and it doesn't feel or look that great to me.

I use an AC Schnitzer shifter in the Z3 and like the Storm is nice a weighty, only downside is in freezing weather they're a pain in your hand literally.

I find the same with my gearbox.
Do these knobs screw on or push fit.

They push fit and they have a retaining grub screw
