Folding mirrors
Hey all
Does anybody know if the E89 can be coded to automatically fold the mirrors in on ignition-off or lock or something? I keep forgetting to press the little button!
Cheers

Re: Folding mirrors
People say that it can be coded - but I have not found anyone who has actually managed it (including dealers).
You can gain this functionality with a smart top unit, maybe have a look at that (I have done this & can confirm it works perfect with the mirrors auto folding on lock / unlock).

Re: Folding mirrors
I find it really odd that this function isn't available as standard and can only be added with a 3rd party module. On a car like this it seems like such a basic option. Someone mentioned that maybe the mirrors aren't stress tested to be repeatedly folded in and out, but if I didn't have the smarttop I would manually do this anyway.

Re: Folding mirrors
No I don't think it can be done except with the smart top. It would be useful, I tend to fold up my mirrors most times when I park (when I remember!).

Re: Folding mirrors
OK just as an update to this I took the car to my local (very good) BMW specialist and he confirmed that the car can't be coded to automatically fold the mirrors in, so it looks like a SmartTop is the way forward...

Re: Folding mirrors
I followed an Evo home the other day and he had his mirrors folded in when driving.
First I thought what a plonker.
Then I thought - Actually how often do you actually use wing mirrors versus how often do you think some knobber coming the other way is going to hit them ?
Maybe we should keep them folded and only unfold when you actually need them .

Re: Folding mirrors
I have an SLK and they fold in when you lock the car, and even when I had an SL from 2002, the mirrors folded in when you locked the car too

Re: Folding mirrors
You will be able to run a relay to have them auto fold in an out on locking and unlocking, this was quite a big topic on the Civinfo site and a lot of guys did this mod. Took a bit of work but not more than £20 to get it all working. It's just wether someone wants to be the first to take their door to bits for this!
With regards to the manual button press, it does come in handy when there is a really tight spot and you know that they car will just make it through but the mirrors sticking out could be hit. I've never had to do it on the E89 but I had to at a Volkswagen garage in Edinburgh in my FN2 when a car transporter was blocking most of the road. Worked a treat

Re: Folding mirrors
Your first thought was right. I suspect that the door mirrors should be used quite alot. For a start, you couldn't overtake anything.Jasey wrote:I followed an Evo home the other day and he had his mirrors folded in when driving.

Why is it that people who can't take advice always insist on giving it?

Re: Folding mirrors
Folding mirrors at lock absolutely can be coded. I just had it done remotely by a guy on the other board. Now if I hold the lock for 1/2 second instead of just pressing it quickly, the mirrors will fold.
