New Owner :)

Post by djstan » Wed Jul 09, 2014 1:50 pm

Hi all.

Proud owner of a 10-plate Z4 35i - loving every minute of it!

I have the Sat Nav / BMW Online stuff, but was wondering if there are any upgrades I can do to it. I used to have an E46 BMW 330d and you could upgrade the firmware on the sat nav by downloading a disc and putting it in.

Things I'm interested in are:

- Updated Maps
- RTTI traffic information (so it looks like Google Maps with traffic switched on)
- Anything else that I may be able to do!! Ha ha.

I have one other query, and that's around the whole Sport / Sport+ etc. - it seems that putting the car into Sport or Sport + affects the throttle response and gear change (I have the DCT box), but does it stiffen the suspension too? I can't tell if it does or doesn't.

Cheers!

Oh - one other query; does anybody know of a decent bike rack I can get for the Z4 so I can take my bike out occasionally?

The suspension change is a big one - i.e. if you do not notice the difference then it isn't changing the suspension.

You only get a suspension change if your car has the adaptive dampers (standard on the 35is / £expensive option on the 35i).

On a roughish road (most in the UK), normal mode suspension is pretty smooth, still feel big bumps but the tiny pitter patter is smoothed out. On sport it is obviously firmer. Sport + and it shakes the fillings from your teeth.

I've looked at a lot of bike racks (on here & in real life) for the z4 - all look unsafe IMHO. If you are serious about toting a bike around I think I would be using a different vehicle tbh.

Thanks Matt - yes I'm thinking about a different vehicle for the bike and possibly work commutes too - keep the Z4 special..

How would I know if it has the adaptive dampers or not? Is there an easy way to tell or is it a case of asking the dealer what options it has?

I looked into the "special" E89 BMW bike rack. If you've got a spare £1600, you can get one of those! :headbang:

Blimey really?? That must be very special at that price - does it do the cycling for you as well? ;-)

This is the only pic I have at the moment (and is kind of a test to see if I can insert a pic!). I'll grab my proper camera and take some decent pics once I've given the car a clean :)

Looks nice but I'd have been nervous parking it right by that scaffolding.

Finally had the opportunity to wash the car :)

Anybody have any thoughts on my original question about 'upgrading' the nav etc.?

Upgrading the maps is possible, if you have iDrive, you have the CIC system. I updated mine last year from 2009 to 2013-2 without any problems. You can do it via USB keys using the port in the glove box. So, you need the Map Media, and an FSC code which is required to activate the Maps. The later Maps also allow 7 character postcodes and 3D buildings in larger cities. Do a search for info on FSC codes...
