I was thinking with a 28i if it was too slow for me then a remap could always help out a good bit. And to be honest I dont really use all the performance in the 1 series as i should. I never ever thought id say it but its made me think that a car can be too fast! poor thing rarely goes over 5k revs

That's unfair. I would have said more like a bunch of skeletons having a disco in a biscuit tin.. (just kidding!)metal licker wrote:Get a 6 cyl the 4 sounds like someone shaking some spanners in a biscuit tin
Why is it that people who can't take advice always insist on giving it?

Funnily enough I've been mulling over going the other way and chopping in for a M135i and adjusting the PCP, my dealer is already bugging me to change lol, certainly the Zed is a better looker but I still like fast hatches only thing I don't like with the F20 is the cheapish looking interior which is not a patch on the Zedsworton wrote:Ill be honest and say looks are quite a large contributing factor, comparing a 3 door 1 series to an orange z4 the z4 looks a million times better and less common! you can spec a 116d to look nearly the same as the m135i. I know what you mean regarding a second car, ive had a few 2 seater cars though which ive managed to live with, and my girlfriend will be driving soon so she can have a boring car to go fetch the shopping in!

Funny you mention that Tim, I am thinking of doing the same! I have an 18i and it definitely doesn't sound like that video!! Maybe up close it does but from the drivers seat it doesn't.
I absolutely love the looks of the zed and the attention it gets but really wish it had more power which is why I'm thinking of a 135i...plus its more practical. Only other option is to upgrade to a 35i
I got 7.5k off my 18i so you should be able to get a decent deal if you are thinking of an 18i or 20i.
The bigger engine the more discount you should be able to get mainly because their 'RRP" is very over priced. Fully spec'd my 18i m sport was 33.5k & I paid 26k brand new.

I gave in to the allure of an M135i. Couldn't part with the Zed though!

I've got till June to make a decision lol either swap the Z4 for say an M 135i which would suit me practicality wise or keep the Z4 and swap the Z3 for a cheapish small hatch/city car, I love the Z4 so a hard decision to make.ut745 wrote:Funny you mention that Tim, I am thinking of doing the same! The m135i is one of the best cars BMW have made in the past decade. Just my opinion but you'd be silly to give it up for anything less than a 35i.

Re: Thinking of moving from an M135i to an e89
I moved from a E88 135i to a E88 120i, was a nice car and I had it well spec'd but I honestly missed the engine of the 135i and I was never that happy.......infact I started looking at 135i's not long after getting it. I said then that my next car wasn't going to be a BMW 2.0l engine and got a 35is but you'll never know what's right for you if you don't take a chance.
You might find a cracking deal on a 28i and think yip this is for me. I'd try one first and then make up your mind. What's right for one person isn't always right for another.

Re: Thinking of moving from an M135i to an e89
I remember ordering my Zed in April last year for delivery end of june. They were keen to meet their sales targets for half year so they were willing to give good discounts. Wait a few weeks and try and get them when they are desperate (especially as zed sales aren't great these days). Also try and go to a bigger dealerships as they can offer more of a discount.
Tim - don't sell the Z3, that is an absolute classic. I still remember my dad getting one of the first Z3s in 1996 - it was like owning a Ferrari back then

Re: Thinking of moving from an M135i to an e89
Last year I test drove an M135i and an E89 - as I remember it was an sDrive2.0i.
Biggest difference between them was the steering - the Z4 was more lively and responsive and not mired in treacle - that six pot up from makes a difference.
Went for the sDrive28i M Sport and have loved having it over the past 12 months. Have driven to Scotland (twice) and France - quite surprising how much booze you can get in the back of the E89 when you pack lightly ! Any musicians out there ? - I got a bass 12" speaker cabinet and a valve bass amp in the boot and the bass guitar behind the seats - more practical than you think..........
On the first long trip up to Scotland - starting off from South East Wales and being sensible with the right foot averaged 41.8mpg on the trip - to put that into perspective - South East Wales to Glasgow and had quarter of a tank of fuel left - had to fill her up when we arrived in Helensburgh though - pretty good.
I like the engine note - at lower revs - it has something of a flat four sound to it - as the speed increases - it gets a bit more 4-pot raspy - but still good in my book - a friend said - ooh - sounds Italian !
I believe the front suspension on 2013- models have been tweaked slightly (correct me if I'm wrong) to give a bit more feel - I'm sure mine is a smidge more quick and incisive than the test drive car.
Great design and every drive is an occasion - I really do like the roadster experience - quite different from the humdrum world of hatchbacks and saloons - and great to have two cars - a coupe and a convertible.
It would be right to say that it is a sporty GT rather than an out an out sports car - it's more refined than my Saab 93 diesel - rides way better and more quietly over bumps.
Ordered the car March (St Patricks day) and it arrived in May - specced high and got a £10k discount - dealers at the time were keen to sell them - so why not !
Not had any issues at all - so in my experience I couldn't recommend it more.
