Hi All,

I am an newbie - to the forum just doing some Google - as I am 99% there in getting an z4.

I currently drive an E92 335i - and coming to to the end of my PCP, so been looking and went to the local stealers to look at the 220I - as size was about right and the savings - cost of running was helping the decision. But my hart was not in the 220I even though with the JB4 stage 1 you can get 200+ BHP.

Anyway, the sales man said what you really want M235 or an Z4 - surprising the wife said well if you want the Z4 have it - as no one goes in the back of your car anyway!! = RESULT

so took out an Z4 2si - and i enjoyed it but had not Guts - and could not commit. And the sales guys was pushing hard - to the point i wanted to walk away!

I visited the stealers main website - and found that they was offering an Z4 28 3k deposit and £359 per month with 10k PA mileage - even though I have not driven the 28si. Its an easy decision as the savings will be over £2,000 per year just in running costs. As I expect to get around 28 MPG tops 30 MPG = Happy days. Rather than currently 24 MPG.

So I wanted to say Hi - and I will update tomorrow.

Hi and Welcome! I assume you tested the 20i, I'm sure the 28i will suit you well. Bit of a step down from a 335i. I'm lobo bing the fact you expect to get less from a 28i than I get from a 35is currently, I assume you drive very hard and in a lot of traffic. I get 28-30mpg adverage on a bad day lol!

Glad to have you on board and can't wait for he update on the recent plunge

Interesting to hear once you've got it what you make of the 4 cylinder engine. As someone who went from a 135i to a 120i I vowed I would never have another BMW 4 cylinder again but others have made a similar jump and seem to love the 28i. Always risky buying a car you've not actually driven though.

Hi and welcome to the forum
I would definitely have a drive in one before purchase , wasn't a fan of the 4cyl engine when I test drove so went for a 35i
Think you will get better than what your expecting regarding the mpg with the 4cyl though :)

Yes, I would test drive as well, the 20i I test drove was dull as ditch water, the dealer had a 428i that I could get a sense of the more powerful 4 cyl engine in which was much better, and the 28i in the z4 seems a little more responsive and a bit louder as well (with the roof down so not sure it counts!)

Thanks for the warm welcome, currently got two stealer's quoting. And got it down to 3k deposit and £360 per month with 28i, white, extra storage "no cup holders" wind deflector, parking f/r sensors, GAP & protect on paint work & 5 year service plan based on 12k miles - so only £10 more a month I pay currently including warranty.

But i am still pushing lol.

I must welcome the post of: http://www.broadspeed.com/new_cars/BMW/Z4/ :D

Also another interesting website for reference to thoughts down grading:- http://www.automobile-catalog.com/perfo ... ve28i.html

My area of interest was:

z4
40-70 mph through gears (sec):3.9
50-90 mph through gears (sec):6.7

335i
40-70 mph through gears (sec):3.9
50-90 mph through gears (sec):6.3

I agree with the post of 35i would sound great, and I think I will have to stop tuning into station 335i, but DAB instead.

But with savings around 2k a year - is significant.

extra-urban / city / highway / average combined:
Z4 mpg (imp.): 39.6-50.6 / 21.6-27.5 / 36.7-44.8 / 33.9
335i mpg (imp.):30.7-39.2 / 17.1-21.8 / 28.6-34.8 / 26.6

And the last two cars I had, both been modified - e46 330d (204 BHP) fantastic - pulled like an rocket, and the current 335i (just to fast for the uk)

And the N20, has great potential - if it needs it.

The only negative I can think of its an 4 pott and not an 6 pott, but its not worth 8k

The last three cars I have purchased never driven, forums are an great sorce of feedback - as I found test drives inconclusive in testing an car.

Snap! I bough my Type R when there was a 6 month waiting list and nothing to test drive, my E88s were done on a lunch break each time and my E89 was done by phone negotiations me in Edinburgh and a dealer in Newcastle. Infact I'd never driven a Z4 of any gen until I handed over the cash for the E89 and went to drive it home. Didn't regret my choices to be honest although from the 135i to a 120i was a good move although a gutsy wee thing. Still loads of fun and I had to push but hard and it sounded good when I did.

Totally understand that 8k of a diff is a lot of money and add that up your already £2k a year saving and it all adds up.

I'm sure you'll love it there has been a few moved to the 28i and I don't think they've regretted it. It will serve you well and give a nice amount of performance when you need it. I'd defo have a 28i over the 18i & 20i!
