Success! Y adaptor arrived from eBay, plugged in with Apple lightning adaptor & bingo: all working!
Still don't understand why it wouldn't recognise iPhone through an official apple USB-30 pin cable & lightning adaptor though - must be something specific in the y cable?!

Re: Play music from iPhone5?
I've had no problems with my iphone 5, 60 reg z4 and just an old micro USB cable and micro-USB to lightning converter which cost £1.50 from eBay. Have to use the same awkward interface as when you plug in a USB stick but its good enough for me. Just want a retrograde apps update but can't decide if it's worth it.

I don't understand why either John - but it's definitely available as an option to be able to do it i.e. money spinner

Re: Play music from iPhone5?
Just bought my 2012 Z4 and trying to sort out my music. Have the USB audio interface and enhanced bluetooth on the car what's the easiest way to get the music from my iPhone playing on the stereo? I have tried connecting through the USB but the iPhone isn't recognised.cr0147 wrote:I've had no problems with my iphone 5, 60 reg z4 and just an old micro USB cable and micro-USB to lightning converter which cost £1.50 from eBay. Is this through Bluetooth? Phone is already paired up. This probably sounds like a daft question.KERMIT1970 wrote:Search for your car from your iPhone

Re: Play music from iPhone5?
Just bought a new 35is and playing with all the new toys and plugged my i phone 5c into the USB port and summond up the external device (previous car showed it as auxilliary device) and it recognised all my play lists straight away. I think itr depends on what multi media system you have rather than the phone and or cable. I used the cable from my charger.
PS I recall the manual saying something along the lines of it may not work if the phone is also paired via bluetooth at the same time so may be worth trying to un pair it.

I put my iPhone 5 on airplane mode and the cable from my charger, trying connecting it and the message came up 'the cable you are using is not currently supported.' Does this mean I need a Y cable and then a lightening adaptor cable? My car is a July 2012 built model with Enhanced Bluetooth telephone functionality & USB interface. I have read I can play music through Bluetooth but can't quite work it out.

The way I have done it is connecting usingthe USB port and the cable is from the phone charger which has a USB at one end and the otherconnects with the i phone. Make sure the bluetooth is off and if it doesn't recognise the music try to leave connected but switch the phone off and re start it. It worked with mine.
